Movie Classics To Binge This Weekend

For some new movie classics to watch, try any of these great suggestions for top comedy, drama, action, and sci-fi. There are many colorful, relatable characters and beautiful art styles in these must-see movies and you won’t be able to stop watching.

Office Space (1999)

A truly great comedy about the struggles of mundane office life for its workers is played out in some of the best ways in Office Space. From the mumbling worker whose desk keeps getting moved, the boss who always asks them to work on the weekends, and the main character who has a life-altering experience and looks at work and life in a new way, this is a must see for anyone who has ever hated their day job.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

One of the best movies about high school life in the 1970s, Dazed and Confused has a great star cast of students in high school and transitioning from middle school who experience senior hazing, new friendships, and the pressures of high school life all in the span of one day, the last day of school. Watch them party it up and have some of the best dialogue conversations that are both wise and super quotable.

Clerks (1994)

Another great movie for modern workers, the black and white in this movie gives it an interesting take on this snapshot into the lives of two clerks, their customers, and the various hijinks they get into. The words, “I’m not even supposed to be here today” will stay with you as you watch the dominoes fall in this one crazy day with relatable customer troubles, relationship conflicts, and yes, some truly great dialogue between the two clerk best friends as they discuss various interesting life topics.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

An absolutely fantastic music score surrounds this movie taking place the summer of 1963 where a Peace Corps bound young woman stays at a resort with her family. Things turn exciting quickly as the guests are shown getting to know and forming complicated relationships with the staff. The facade of smiling guest entertainment and the behind the scenes lives of the resort workers is endlessly fascinating and watching the steamy romance that ensues between the two main characters will be the time of your life

Blade Runner (1982)

This is a must-see movie for any sci-fi fan, with so many interesting cyberpunk settings, costumes, and characters, it’s truly a beauty to watch. Harrison Ford plays a “blade runner” or someone tasked with tracking down A.I. individuals who have gained more awareness and autonomy outside of government control. The movie gives great dialogue and thought-provoke to the concepts of what is life, what makes up life, how it is defined, and who has a right to it. The acting, especially of the A.I. characters, is particularly spot on.

Alien (1979)

A horror sci-fi movie where the suspense never stops is what you can expect from this movie classic about life on other planets. This movie particularly speaks to the terror in the unknown areas of other planets and what secrets they hold. Be careful what you bring back with you and be wary, because you can never prepare for something you’ve never experienced on Earth. There are many heart-stopping scenes of alien life versus human and the struggles to make it back alive and uncontaminated.

Spirited Away (2001)

Spirited Away is a movie for tentative anime lovers that has a beautiful and unique art style and an ever-interesting plot of a child lost and disconnected from their parents in unfamiliar spirit land. Packed with colorful, magical characters and a child’s struggles to reconnect with their family, this is an original Studio Ghibli movie you should definitely experience if you haven’t seen any Ghibli movies before. The plot stays intriguing as well as the mischief and mayhem that ensues along the journey.

Army of Darkness (1992)

This hilariously terrifying movie follows the adventures of a supermarket worker who finds himself sent back to medieval times. He is captured by an evil lord who sends him on a merciless quest to find a mysteriously powerful book capable of performing remarkable feats for its owner. Dead Poets Society (1989)

Robin Williams is at his best in his role as a prep school English teacher who teaches his students about seeking your own perspectives and paths in life. A few of the students become inspired by his rebellious outlook while amassed in a restrictive, structured school and create their own secret literary society. This movie is filled with beautiful fall views and touching moments of growth and maturity for the key characters who encompass all of William’s best teachings and vow to never forget.

The Iron Giant (1999)

A must-see animated classic at its heart, The Iron Giant takes on some very touching and thought-provoking subject material through the relationship between a giant metal robot and the world he lands on. Built by an unknown force outside of Earth, the robot is built as a weapon but struggles with the nature of his identity and purpose as an object of destruction as his relationship with the boy he meets grows. He learns about morality and violence in a time of government paranoia and fear of invasion. The message of caring over fear will stick with you.
