Going to school in New York City has many perks, from surprise encounters with celebrities while running on your gym’s treadmill (OK, maybe only if you go to Equinox, but still) to being able to score tickets to Saturday Night Live (still working on that). My personal favorite perk is access to all the trendiest, weirdest, and tastiest foods. With restaurants around every corner however, deciding where to go can be daunting. You’ve had a billion chocolate chip cookies before, so why wait in line to try this one? Because this is the essential chocolate chip cookie. With a crispy, buttery outside and gooey, warm inside, you’ll be back in line before you know it.
This stuff really is crack. Every time I try to go on a low-sugar diet, I walk by an Ample Hill Creamery and break down. I’ve had many a salted caramel ice cream in my 19 years, but this one takes the cake. Speaking of which, pair it with their butter-cake ice cream for the best combo of your life.
This milkshake brings everyone to the yard. And it’s worth the hype. No need to eat dinner, this milkshake provides a full on five-course meal.
If you ever need to impress a date, look no further than Spot Dessert Bar. If your date manages to not be impressed by this edible work of art, try the cake served in a flower pot or the bubble tea served in a light bulb. If they’re still not impressed, dump them on the spot.
Given banana’s are one of the most-hated fruits, the fact everyone’s going bananas over this banana pudding tells you it’s gotta be really good. It is.
Jet-black food can be pretty gross (McDonald’s Squid Ink Burger, anyone?), but I’m in love with this coconut ash ice cream. With out-of-this-world flavors like this, I don’t know why anyone would choose vanilla. However, if you’re a vanilla-person, my friend claims theirs is the best he’s ever had.
Nothing dingy about these waffles! With stands set up in Central and Bryant Park, Wafel & Dinges makes the perfect pit stop to regain all the calories you burned off on your walk.
Beware: this is not for amateur sweet-tooth’s. This stuff is heavy. It’s like eating a giant scoop of cookie dough. Oh wait- that’s exactly what it is. But hey, who doesn’t love sneaking cookie dough when they’re baking?
I promised myself I’d never spend $6.50 on a hot chocolate- but then I tasted Grom’s. Now I’m a believer. Not a trace of doubt in my mind, I’m in love. This hot chocolate proves that, contrary to adult-haters, hot chocolate is not just coffee for wimps. Nope, this hot chocolate is hard-core chocolaty.
10. Taiyaki‘s Soft Serve
It comes in a fish shaped cone- what more could you possibly want? My personal recommendation: order the black sesame and matcha swirled soft serve topped with crushed oreo, mochi, a chocolate wafer, and condensed milk drizzle. Not recommended: ordering this while trying to get in shape for bikini season like I did.
Side-perk of having a Peruvian best friend: lots and lots of ceviche. Thus, I’ve become somewhat of a ceviche-connoisseur (very marketable skill). This ceviche from Mission Ceviche is a little pricey. However, the fish is perfectly done, and as this instagrammer put it, “the guys at the counter were hot and had nice accents.”
This ramen place is so underrated. Their miso ramen is incredible. TBH, I ate it like every other night first semester. No regrets.
Ironically, the best noodles at Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles I’d argue are not the hand-pulled ones, but the knife-cut ones. You really can’t go wrong however; every dish I’ve tried here has been outstanding.

Listen up, ‘cuz you’re definitely gonna want a pizza this margarita pizza. Now, I’ve been to the top pizza places in the world in Naples, and this margarita slice is the closest thing I’ve found in NYC. (Probably because chef Michele Iuliano is from Naples and imports all the ingredients.) At $3 a slice, it’s not dollar pizza, but it’s worth the two bucks extra.
It might seem pretentious to put the word “famous” in your restaurant’s name… I mean, what if it turns out a flop? Lucky for Xi’an Famous Food’s, they ended up actually becoming famous in NYC thanks to dishes like their ox-tail noodle soup.
Katz Deli is more than a restaurant- it’s a NYC institution, With rent as high as it is in NYC, to stay open since 1888 you have to have incredible food. Sorry vegetarians, you’re going to have to sit this one out.
