The 10 Most Bizarre Holiday Celebrations From Around The World

Holiday celebrations are a lot of fun and are great for bringing families together. Most countries have more national holidays than others but there are certain ones that a lot of us share. However, there are some incredibly strange ones that are unique to particular countries. Check out these 10 most bizarre holiday celebrations from around the world – who knows, you may discover something new to add to your party calendar!

1. La Tomatina

Spain, last Wednesday in August

This surprising festival actually isn’t linked to any tradition – it’s purely for fun! It began in 1945, when some of the local citizens decided to throw some fruit and veg during a parade. That was when this bizarre celebration was born and it revolves around throwing tomatoes at each other. It sounds ridiculous but it’s so much fun.

2. Wanderlust Yoga Festival

Hawaii, varying dates

This may be a bizarre celebration but I see why it’s so popular; after all, yoga’s become a big deal recently. If you’re into spiritual practice then this festival might be the right one for you. It’s also a great excuse to chill on the beautiful Hawaiian beaches.

3. Kanamara Matsuri Festival

Japan, April

Brace yourself, this celebration is definitely one of the weirdest things you have ever heard of. It’s dedicated to… penises. Yes, you read that right – this festival is about everything phallic. There are tons of penis-shaped ornaments on display and you can even participate in a phallic-themed vegetable carving workshop.

4. Air Guitar World Championships

Finland, August

Have you ever been to a rock or metal concert with no musical instruments? Well, this is your chance – this air guitar festival doesn’t actually feature any guitars. According to the organisers, this bizarre celebration is dedicated to promoting world peace. It’s a great musical experience that’s just a bit unconventional.

5. Lopburi Monkey Banquet

Thailand, November

Where else in the world would you get the opportunity to cuddle with three thousand monkeys if not at this festival! The banquet is dedicated to our furry friends who get to enjoy an unlimited supply of fruit, veg, ice cream, and other delicious goodies.

6. Noche de los Rábanos (Night of the Radishes)

Mexico, December

We’re all used to pumpkin carving, but have you ever considered radish carving? This unique festival that takes place in Mexico is all about just that – carving intricate sculptures out of giant radishes. It’s a great way for local radish farmers to show off their produce as well as some artistic skill.

7. La Pourcailhade (Festival of the Pig)

France, August

See Also

You guessed it – this quirky celebration is dedicated to pigs. It consists of different activities that involve pigs, such as sausage eating, pig imitation, and piglet racing. I wonder if that means that you’re allowed to act like a pig for the day? Sounds tempting.

8. Yorkshire Pudding Boat Race

England, June

Contrary to your expectations, this celebration has nothing to do with eating Yorkshire pudding, which I think is a big shame. Instead, the pudding is made into giant boats that compete in a race to cross a pond. In order to reduce sogginess, the poor Yorkshires are first coated in varnish.

9. Busó Festival

Hungary, March

This celebration is rooted in history – it dates back to the 18th century. It involves men dressing up as evil spirits (the Busós) and attempting to chase away winter. It’s an oddly terrifying yet fun celebration dedicated to the arrival of spring.

10. El Colacho (Baby Jumping Festival)

Spain, June

If jumping over babies is your thing, then you’ll definitely enjoy this festival. The idea is that people dress up as the Devil and jump over babies that were born in the past twelve months. Reason? It is supposed to cleanse the babies of original sin and safeguard them from evil spirits. This is definitely one of the bizarre holiday celebrations you don’t want to miss.
