If you’re a habitual traveler or just getting started, you might find yourself looking for a new suitcase. Here are some pretty affordable options, all under 100 dollars.
The first suitcase we have on offer is Xpedition 30-inch rolling duffle by Traveler’s Club. This is one of the more affordable on this list, costing only 42 dollars on Amazon. However, it’s a very solid pick for it’s price point. This rolling duffel bag has a 77 liter central space with numerous external pockets. It’s also an incredibly light suitcase for it’s size, around 6 pounds empty. In terms of appearance, it’s pretty good looking, and is designed very efficiently. The Xpedition series is also built for long-term travel and outdoor trips, so it can take a beating if needs be. The fact that it has a voluminous central space with 6 external pockets means you can carry a lot of luggage, while keeping your things organized. It also has two carry handles and a set of in-line wheels for ease of transport. It’s good if you don’t want to spend too much, but as I said in my last article about suitcases, they’re an investment that will last you for decades if you treat them right.
Suitcase number two is another highly affordable option before we go into the higher end of things. At only 40 dollars on amazon, this 21-inch hardside suitcase has roughly half the capacity of the previous entry, but is far more durable due to its construction. Its also a fair bit more stylish than a duffle bag. If you want a rugged carryon with minimal trappings and a durable frame, this one definitely fits the bill. It comes with a hardened plastic exterior shell and a cloth divider for easier organization. This suitcase is also fitted with spinner wheels for ease of transport. The external surface has also been treated to be scratch-resistant, and it has built-in combination locks to prevent break-ins or theft. Overall it’s a very standard and practical hardside and a good baseline for what to expect. However, this basic design does mean it lacks things like internal padding or usb ports. If you want a durable carryon suitcase that carries luggage and resists damage fairly well, then this one should meet your standards. Everything after this will be more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Our next suitcase is a step up in both price and functionality when it comes to carryons. Part of Wrangler’s EL DORADO line, this suitcase will cost you 64 dollars on Amazon, but is entirely worth the investment if you want a few extra features besides just carrying stuff. This carryon features a 3 in one cup holder, phone holder and USB port built into it, in addition to it’s standard suitcase functionality. And said functionality is top tier, with an expandable compartment, fabric lined interior, and a spinner wheel configuration. As a hardshell, its also very durable, and works very well for people who travel frequently but often only need the bare necessities. In terms of actual design its also pretty stylish, and unlike the previous hardside on this list is a lot more accommodating of stickers and other decorations due to the ridges on its shell being less pronounced. Essentially, this suitcase is an archetypical hardside with a few extra features and improvements that make it worth the increased price tag. It’s not exactly massive in terms of capacity but it’s a carryon, it doesn’t need to be huge. Overall a solid pick if you have the extra cash.
Our number 4 suitcase isn’t technically a suitcase, but a high-capacity travel backpack, but it was just too good to not include. Costing only 46 dollars on Amazon, this backpack is built for modern travel without sacrificing style. Made from high-durability, water-resistant materials, this expandable pack has a capacity of 40 liters, about the same as the last two carryons on the list. It also comes with several “packing cubes”, essentially small modules that can be stored within the main backpack for ease of organization, which can be removed should you decide you don’t want or need them. It’s also very sturdy and can hold a lot of weight, and is advertised as having the capacity to hold enough gear for a week-long outdoor trip. It also comes with a lock and and a specialized anti-theft compartment for valuables like computers or other tech. You’ll absolutely get a lot of mileage out of this one, both in travel and in your daily life. A solid, well-made travel pack for business or for leisure. It’s even compatible with a USB power block so you can charge your phone. Overall, this pack is absolutely worth the price.
The final suitcase on our list is probably the most expensive, but it’s undoubtedly very high quality. At around 60 dollars on Amazon, this bag is primarily for weekend trips, as is evidenced by its small size. However, if you do make many short trips, its perfect for them. it has inline skate wheels and is well-balanced enough to stand on its own. It is also probably the nicest-looking bag on the list, with a quilted exterior that allows it to better resist impacts. Its small size also means it can be stowed underneath airplane seats, allowing you to bring it even on the most crowded of flights. Rockland is also a well-respected name in the luggage industry, so you can generally trust that you’ll be getting your money’s worth. It does have it’s limits, mainly the fact that it’s pretty small compared to some other items on this list, but luggage size is often a balancing act when it comes to what you’ll need. If you plan to make many small trips, smaller luggage is to be expected. In the end, it’s up to you to decide what you do or don’t need.
