8 Mistakes Everyone Makes With Skincare Regimes

Creating a good skincare routine for yourself can be life changing. The benefits of great skin will boost more than just your self-confidence. You’ll have a healthy and energetic glow and everyone will be complimenting your skin.

However, you won’t be the first to make any of these mistakes and you certainly won’t be the last. These are the most common mistakes people make when it comes to skincare. When you recognise you are making this mistake, it can be easily fixed and you can get back to perfect skin once more.

1. Using The Wrong Moisturiser

There are so many different types of moisturiser. A day cream, night cream, mask, gel cream, lotion, emulsion, serum, concentrate, cleanser. It is important to know which one is right for your skin type. A lot of descriptions on the back of the products or online/in store will help you gather which one is best for you. There are many different ranges and if you have oily skin and are using a range for dry skin you will not be benefiting from the ingredients in the products. Help is at hand. Identify your skin type and ask someone what is best for you. Different products target different types or layers of skin so if you are using the wrong moisturiser there is a chance that your skincare isn’t benefiting you as much as it should be.

2. Not knowing their skin type

Identifying your skin type is easier than it may seem. You can professionally test the hydration levels of your skin or use a sebum test on your chin, nose, cheek and forehead to determine the answer. But your skin will mostly fall under one category: Dry, oily, combination, dry, sensitive, aged, blemished. By using your fingers and a mirror you can find out what category you fall into. Touch your skin. Does it feel dry? Does it look shiny all the time? Do you suffer from wrinkles or come out in red patches when you use products on your skin? Knowing your skin type is one of the first steps to getting the most out of your skincare regime and the most common mistake within skincare.

3. Using cheap products

Getting your £1 face cream from the supermarket may not always be the most beneficial thing for your skin. Most of the time the quality of skincare products is reflected in the price. You do not have to spend thousands on your face creams because it has 24 carats gold in it, but normally, good stuff which is right for your skin will range between £5-£30. Most of it lasts a really long time so you are getting your money’s worth. But it is also important to not determine your skincare on the price. You can get some really good deals on good products – and how do you know if it is a good product? Ask! Ask around see what other people use that have skin like yours, what do people recommend? What is being promoted at the moment? It doesn’t hurt to ask.

4. Not knowing what the products are

It is all well and good using a serum and a facial oil and a night cream but if you don’t know what they are doing for your skin and what order to put them in – they will not work. Google or ask a skincare expert how to use the products and what order you should use them in. A lotion should come before a serum, after a serum use a moisturiser. All this should come after cleansing with a toning. If your mind is boggled – find out what we mean. Your skin will thank you.

5. Not cleaning your face first

Using a face wash morning and night will change your skin massively. Add an exfoliation element or a facial peel which will lift the dirt from the skin and get all that dead skin off your face for an easy absorption of the products you are using. If you are not cleaning your face first, you are essentially rubbing all the dirt and nasty stuff on your skin around your face with the product. If you do not have time to do this in the morning – make sure that you wash your face once a day and exfoliate once or twice a week. Or use a cleanser and then a toner to wash your face in the morning and clear all the excess makeup and night products you used off so your serums etc can skin into the skin better and ultimately benefit your face.

6. Only Using Day Cream

There are three important layers of the skin and each product targets a different layer. Your face cream will only be targeting the top layer of your skin so will not help combat the anti-ageing process or the excess oil on your skin or the dehydration. Only using a day cream is a real crime in the skincare world. You should at least wash your face daily too if you don’t want to put a lot of product on your face. Most of them are lightweight however you may not like the feel of some of them. That is a huge benefit of making your own skincare regime, you can literally make up what products you use.

7. Using Products In The Wrong Order

If you use an oil before a moisturiser – well done. If you use a day cream before a serum or a toner after a cleanser you are not using the products in a correct way for you. They need to be used in the right order so you are getting the most out of the regime and are not blocking the products from working. It should say on the back of the packaging how to use this product and what it should follow, however, if it doesn’t, ask or use the internet or follow the brief guide in step 4.

8. Using Products Which Are The Same

Products for your skin are called so many things – some fancier than others. Normally you would use an oil, concentrate or serum in the same step because they are ultimately the same thing but formulated for different skin types. Don’t make the mistake of using the same products which are called different things. An easy way to determine this is by the packaging. It will provide a simplified version of how to use this product and you can normally tell if it is describing the same thing.
