10 Memories Of Growing Up In Grosse Pointe, MI

All of us always say “I can’t wait to get out” and once we get that first taste of freedom the one thing we think is “I’m never coming back”. But no matter how far we may stray from home, we always have the memories only special to those who have traveled down Lakeshore Drive through the small suburbs of Grosse Pointe, MI.

1. Late night Slurpee runs to 7/11

No matter what time of year it was, a late-night drive down Lakeshore to the local 7/11 was always a must. Whether it was 8 pm and the sun was just beginning to set or midnight after the basketball team had just won the big game, there was one place you could go in Grosse Pointe, MI that would always be open.

2. Eating at “Thai”

Going to TN Thai Bistro at least once a week was routine, it was the best place to catch up with your friends and talk about the latest drama in each other’s lives. And you can’t forget about the colorful chips they always bring to the table. So satisfying but no one knows what they are.

3. Friday night lights

It didn’t matter how old you were or which school you supported the local high school football games were always the best way to kick off the weekend. And there was nothing like the first game of the season right before the new school year was about to start and the weather was still warm.

4. Spending hours in the Village

Everyone knows what the term “Village Rat” means. If you spent most of your time walking with your friends in the Village after school you most likely were one.

5. Parcells Fireworks

The one time of year when all the Grosse Pointe communities would come together and set up lawn chairs on Parcells soccer field to watch the local firework show.

6. Sledding in the Winter

As a kid, there was nothing like waking up in the morning and seeing the first snowfall of the year. There was only one thing that ever came to mind, besides “I wonder if school is canceled?” Which it never was.

7. Swimming in the Lake

Whether you went out boating with your family or spent the day at one of the local parks with your friends, everyone can say that they have jumped in Lake St. Clair at least once.

It didn’t matter which park you belonged to when summer came around. It was the number one place for family and friends to gather. Whether it was for a birthday party, Fourth of July or just a chance to catch up, barbeques at the park were some of the best memories.

9. Tigers games

April always marked the beginning of baseball season. Summer was not complete unless you went to at least one Tigers game. Heading to Comerica Park for a baseball game was a social event that always brought everyone together.

10. Summer bonfires

No matter what the day brought, somehow it always ended with you and a couple of friends gathered around a campfire singing campfire songs.
