With warm weather finally upon us, that means Memorial Day is almost here. Whether you will be relaxing on a boat somewhere sunny or headed home for the annual backyard barbeque, you’re probably planning on spending time with family. However you plan on spending your Memorial Day, if you’re looking for some crafts to do to get the whole family involved, here are some Memorial Day DIY crafts the whole family can enjoy.
While not entirely a craft, this is definitely something everyone can enjoy. Pinterest is chock full of all kinds of baked goods themed around Memorial Day. Try a patriotic pie to get your taste buds in the spirit. Or, if that’s not your thing, try some cupcakes or cake. If baking is not your family’s forte, they have all kinds of snack displays themed around red, white, and blue sure to be a hit. There are literally so many options, just find a recipe that works for your family and get to it.
Nothing is more American than mason jars, let’s be real. They are a DIY trend right now, and have been for a few years now. Your mom probably has dozens of DIY projects already involving mason jars, so why not take the extra and get a little creative? Get some red, white, and blue paint and go to town designing some stars and stripes on the jars. Once you’re done, you can use them for anything you want. Fill them with wax and you’ve got candles. Fill them with water and add some flowers, and you’ve got the most patriotic flower vases on the block. The possibilities are endless.
I’m sure you or your mom have a whole bunch of wine corks lying around. For some reason, no one can ever just throw them away. One day, we will have a purpose for all of them. Well, one way you can use them is to turn a good chunk of them into a flag to hang on the wall. Get some paint and get creative. Glue the pieces together and add a rope and you have a very patriotic piece of wall décor to wow your barbeque guests.
Again, refer to Pinterest for ideas, but there are tons of them. You can use colored paper or go out and buy some tissue, but a door wreath is a great idea and you can use it for multiple holidays. This Memorial Day craft works for Veteran’s Day, the Fourth of July, and so many more if you do it right.
Who doesn’t love festive drinks? There’s just something about theming the colors of your cocktail to the holiday that makes it taste so much better. There are dozens of recipes online for whatever kind of drink you prefer. Just run down to the store, get the ingredients, and get lit in the most patriotic of fashion. For your younger family members, maybe just leave the alcohol out. Then everyone can get it on the fun!
This can get super sentimental if you have a soldier in the family. Create a scrapbook of their military memories to honor them. This brings the family together in the sweetest of ways and brings remembrance to this holiday. It isn’t all about barbeques and long weekends, y’all. If you don’t have a soldier in the family to scrapbook for, do it for all the soldiers. Your younger family members will love looking at the pictures and the older ones will appreciate the history.
