The film, which earned Director Maïmouna Doucouré the Directing Award at the 2020 Sundance Film festival, follows a traditional 11-years-old Senegalese Muslim girl who joins a dance group. However, she finds herself torn between two contrasting sides: Traditional values and Internet culture. The film also tackles the hypersexualization of pre-adolescent girls.

Along with the its’ and suggestive dance sequences, the film’s controversial promotional poster, sparked so much outrage on social media that a petition claiming that Cuties “sexualizes an 11-year-old for the viewing pleasure of paedophiles” circulated online and as of August 22, has received almost 245,000 signatures. In response to the subsequent backlash, Netflix released a new promotional poster for the film and issued an apology on Twitter, stating: “We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties.
