Imagine just acing a test and that adrenaline you feel when you walk out of the classroom. You pick up the phone to tell your mom, but your excitement and adrenaline both are turned down because of the unfortunate news she’s delivering you. The loss of a loved one.
Losing a loved one is a tragic event, let alone losing a loved one while away at college. In the last two years, I’ve lost a total of two family members while being away at school. The feeling of not being able to be there with your family at that time is horrible. There’s no more focusing on school work. There’s more of staying in bed and feeling heart broken.
The loss of a loved one in general is one thing, one horrific thing. But this feeling is a feeling of being restrained because not only are you 2-3 hours away, but even if you WERE there, there is still nothing you can do.
Some people find ways to cope, but with others, coping just isn’t in their vocabulary for that specific situation. However, on Winthrop’s campus, there are people and places to go for help like the Crawford building. It’s the “nurse’s office” for college and there are great people there that are trained and ready to help in any way they can for situations like these.
Some people prefer to stay to themselves. Others prefer to talk about it either to the school psychologists or their peers. Everyone is different and everyone copes differently.
On top of the stress we have to deal with in college, losing a loved one just sends you over the top. I won’t say, “it’s okay” or “it will get better” because everyone is different and not everyone heals at the same pace. I will say keep pushing and hold on because it will only make you stronger.
