If you’re from Long Island like I am, then you know just how good our bagels are. If you’re not from Long Island, then you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. You may think that it’s just a bagel and it’s pretty hard to mess up a bagel, but let me assure you, it definitely can be done. I’ve done my fair share of traveling, so I can attest to the fact that bagels simply just aren’t as good (some even just straight up bad) anywhere else. Here’s why people from Long Island are obsessed with bagels.
The first reason as to why our bagels are so good may be surprising to you – the water. That’s right, the secret to our amazing bagels just may be the water. The aquifiers that provide Long Island with our water contain a unique combination of minerals that are apparently ideal for bagel making. So ideal, in fact, that bagel shops in Florida actually import water from Long Island so they can take their shot at making Long Island-like bagels. We are obsessed by bagels for good reason.
The water, however, is not the only factor that contributes to our out-of-this-world bagels. The other factor is that our bagels are made the old-fashioned way – hand-formed, boiled instead of steamed, and baked on long wooden slats in hot ovens. So, between our amazing, mineral-packed water and our old-fashioned bagel making style, it’s no wonder why Long Islanders are so obsessed with bagels. A bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel paired with coffee or an iced tea is the ideal, go-to breakfast for every Long Islander. Don’t knock it till you try it. Being obsessed with bagels is something we are not ashamed of!
Should you ever find yourself on Long Island, do yourself a favor and grab a bagel for breakfast one time (or every time). You can take your pick of any of our numerous bagel shops because I promise you won’t find a bad one here. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.
