International Women’s Day And What It Means For Girls Around The World

Get ready ladies, because International Women’s Day is coming in hot! Taking place on March 8th, 2019 and it’s a great time to shine! This day is meant to empower women all around the world for their contribution to society. It is also a day for women to fight for the right’s that they still strive to achieve every day. And most importantly, for women around the world, International Women’s Day is meant to be a day of celebration for women’s economic, political, social, and cultural achievements throughout history. Read on to learn more about this fantastic day!

History

Believe it or not, International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the early 1900s. The very first women’s day was acknowledged in the U.S. back in February of 1909 when Women took a stand to fight against unfair working conditions. This began an active thread of movements around the world, in which multiple countries ranging from Russia to Germany acknowledged International Women’s Day. The first year International Women’s Day was celebrated annually was in 1911, and it is now observed around the world every year on March 8th.

What Does It Mean?

Presently, the celebrated day is a call for women around the world to rise up and celebrate their achievements while also continuing the on-going fight for gender equality in their day-to-day life. Women from varying countries celebrate this day differently, but all in all, this day is for women to come together and feel empowered by the collective strength they gain from one another. For some women around the world, International Women’s Day may be a time to fight for rights they are still seeking. For example, women in Saudi Arabia still are not permitted the ability to drive, while the gender-equality bill in Russia is still under pending-review, and in most countries, equal pay between genders does not exist. While the stand that takes place on this day differs from women to women, the overall concept is clear. For women to come together, and demand what they rightfully deserve.

How can you celebrate?

International Women’s Day is a great day to celebrate being a woman! Perhaps the first step to celebrating recognizes that while we have come a long way since 1909, in some areas of the world, women still have a long way to go. Take this information in, and then make a stand for what it is you’re fighting for!

Join a march for something you believe in! You can choose to walk to bring an end to domestic abuse, march to end equal pay and stand up against social inequality. Joining a march this year is a great way to celebrate while also contributing to the ongoing stand that women take every day.

Make a donation to a woman’s refuge that you believe in!

Nothing ever changes if we don’t try to make a change, and International Women’s Day is no excuse! So do your part this year, and celebrate your fellow ladies like you never have before.
