History

Believe it or not, International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the early 1900s. The very first women’s day was acknowledged in the U.S. back in February of 1909 when Women took a stand to fight against unfair working conditions. This began an active thread of movements around the world, in which multiple countries ranging from Russia to Germany acknowledged International Women’s Day. The first year International Women’s Day was celebrated annually was in 1911, and it is now observed around the world every year on March 8th.

What Does It Mean?

Presently, the celebrated day is a call for women around the world to rise up and celebrate their achievements while also continuing the on-going fight for gender equality in their day-to-day life. Women from varying countries celebrate this day differently, but all in all, this day is for women to come together and feel empowered by the collective strength they gain from one another. For some women around the world, International Women’s Day may be a time to fight for rights they are still seeking. For example, women in Saudi Arabia still are not permitted the ability to drive, while the gender-equality bill in Russia is still under pending-review, and in most countries, equal pay between genders does not exist. While the stand that takes place on this day differs from women to women, the overall concept is clear. For women to come together, and demand what they rightfully deserve.
