5 Influential LGTBQ+ Activists That You Should Be Following

Pride month might be over, but that doesn’t mean that we should instantly stop talking about important LGBTQ+ matters until next year. So, if you feel like you’re lacking some LGBTQ+ positivity and passion since pride month ended, why not give one of the 5 influential LGBTQ+ activists a follow?

1. Laverne Cox

You might know Laverne Cox for her role as Sophia Burset in the fantastic Orange is the New Black, however, she is not just known for her fantastic acting, but also her commitment to campaigning for equality, especially for trans people. Laverne is a regular user of the #TransIsBeautiful hashtag and as well as sharing her passion on Instagram for better equality and treatment for trans people, but she’s also a big advocate of body positivity and regularly posts on Instagram about loving yourself and your body. If you’re looking for someone to follow that will give you plenty of food for thought and also make you feel great about yourself, Laverne is the one for you.

2. Cara Delevingne

I think it would be safe to say that most people have likely heard of Cara Delevingne, but what many don’t realise that she does identify as a member of the LGTBQ+ community – in fact, rumour has it she is engaged to the one and only Ashley Benson from PLL. In addition, Cara often speaks out about various injustices on her Instagram account, from sexism, to mental health, to LGBTQ+ matters. She is a great advocate of, as her Instagram bio states, “embracing your weirdness” and she believes in not labelling yourself and instead living your life. Cara is definitely someone to follow if you’re looking for a positive influence on your Instagram feed.

3. Shannon Beveridge

You may know Shannon better by her YouTube username, NowThisIsLiving. Shannon has been open about being a lesbian on YouTube for many years now, sharing her life and relationships in vlogs. She often speaks out on YouTube, Instagram and Twitter about LGBTQ+ matters. If you’re someone who is feeling very alone, you may find comfort in Shannon’s YouTube videos, where she often talks of her struggles with coming to terms with her sexuality and learning to love herself. Shannon is a great advocate of being true to who you are and living your life to the max – give her a follow if you’re looking for some guidance and support in your life.

Adam’s Instagram is absolutely jam packed full of really important captions about the history of LGBTQ+ rights, existing issues, and how to continue fighting for LGBTQ+ rights in future. He is extremely passionate about these rights and his Instagram captions are always extremely factual and moving. Adam is also super passionate about body positivity and fighting for the rights of those that are less able – so if these are things that you’re passionate about too, you should definitely give him a follow.

5. Olly Alexander

Lead singer of Years & Years, Olly Alexander, has long used his platform to discuss LGBTQ+ related issues. Recently, a speech of his at Glastonbury 2019 went viral when he spoke out about how it is important to thank those who have fought for LGBTQ+ rights in the past and to continue doing their work as although we have made great progress, we still have a long way to go and mustn’t forget that. He has spoken out many times on Instagram and Twitter about issues that he’s very passionate about, so give him a follow to check those out.
