8 Important Steps That Will Help You Get Over Your Ex

Let’s be honest… breakups are hard.  When a relationship comes to an end, whether you saw it coming or not, it is totally OK to sit and sulk for a while. The important thing, however, is to not live there…to pick yourself back up again and keep going.  As the old saying goes, there would be no flowers if it wasn’t for the rain.  We’ve got some tips that will help you navigate this difficult period in your life.  Here are 8 important steps that will help you get over your ex and continue to push forward.

1. Do Things That Make You Feel Most Like You

Is there something you did when you were single that you lost sight of during a relationship? This tends to happen. When a relationship begins to blossom, you might lose sight of some things that were once important to you due to being infatuated with your significant other.  Remind yourself of these activities and refresh your love for them.  If they had brought you joy once before, there is a very good chance that they will have the same effect on you now and get you back on track to feeling like yourself.

2. Get Rid Of Things That Remind You Of Your Ex

Those old sweatpants that you used to throw on every night before bed? Or is it that one hoodie you have sitting in your closet that you see every time you open the door? It would be best to get rid of these items.  Drop them off on your ex’s house, donate them, whatever works best for you…just DON’T ask to see them if you do choose to drop them off.  This will only stir up emotions and make matters more complicated for the both of you after a split.

3. Talk About How You Are Feeling

Don’t keep any emotions you may be having bottled up inside.  This isn’t a healthy way to deal with feelings.  Turn to a friend or a loved one and talk about what you may be feeling inside.  Trust us, sometimes just saying things out loud can be a relief.  If you aren’t one who feels comfortable with this, try writing your feelings down in a journal.  This is the next best things to saying them aloud.

4. Get Out And About

Sure, you can sit, sulk, and eat chocolate for a little while, but don’t make it a habit.  Get out and about and engage in activities and conversations.  This will help get your mind off of things that may be bothering you behind closed doors.  We aren’t saying go out and party if you don’t want to, a simple task such as going to the gym or grabbing coffee with friends will do the trick.

5. Delete Or Block Their Social Media Accounts

Nothing hurts more than checking your social media accounts and seeing your ex out and about, or worse, with someone new.  Save yourself from this hurt and delete or block them on any social media platform you are friends with them on.  Not only will this protect your feelings from becoming hurt, but it will also allow you to continue focusing on yourself and your growth.

6. Listen To Uplifting Music

After a breakup, the content you consume if completely your own choice.  If you chose to watch sad, goopy love movies or listen to depressing music, that’s completely your choice…but will it help you heal? Probably not. Try to choose content that uplifts you, not brings you down into sulking mode.

7. Surround Yourself With People You Love

Friends or loved ones will always be there to remind you just how important and cared for you truly are.  It’s important to never lose sight of this.  You may feel alone after a relationship has ended, but remember all of the other relationships you have in life such as friendships and more.

8. Remind Yourself That Things Aren’t As They Once Were

Sometimes, when a relationship ends, you find yourself missing the best of times had throughout your time with your significant other. Remind yourself that things aren’t as they once were and that there is a reason the relationship ended. Accepting this is one of the hardest things to accomplish, but when you do, the process to get over your ex will truly begin.
