Meeting someone new can be nerve racking, but going on 20 pre dates will make you the ultimate dating expert. Let the five minute conversations of speed dating help you decide whether you want a real first date. I went speed dating for the first time and here’s what happened.
I’ve heard that speed dating is a great way to meet new people. With many failed dates in the past, I wanted to talk with someone for a short time and determine whether I wanted a full blown date with them. But, don’t get me wrong, the idea of speed dating really freaked me out.
By this time, I’d been single for over a year, so on a random Friday night my best-friend and I got ready for a splurge of pre-dates.
The rules are pretty simple: you essentially table-hop after your 6 minutes are up and tick yes or no to whether you’d want an actual date with that person.
I arrive at the restaurant and am quite surprised at the crowd. The ambiance is pretty laid back and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. My nervousness settled a bit, and so I found myself at the bar.
I laughed with my friend and ordered a drink until the event started at 7.
Pre date #1 was pretty intense. The guy’s name was David, and let’s just say he was trying to hard. Firstly, he introduced himself as a self-employed resume writer (nothing wrong with that). I asked how that was going and everything went downhill from there.
He explained that he was a regular speed dater looking for an adventurous woman.Ultimately, I wrote down no for a first date.
Pre date #3 was a kindergarten teacher who was easy on the eyes. He told me he was a widow, and that he lost his wife to a car accident. Something about how he said it felt wrong. My suspicious were confirmed when he told my friend a different story.
He seemed to good to be true. Everything was calculated.
By this time, I was quite satisfied with my speed dating experience. Only a couple of men were definite no’s. Pre date #12 was a mechanical engineer named Charles. He had a sweet smile and beautiful hazel eyes.
We hit it off immediately, and I was quite sad that time was up so fast. I click yes, and continue on.
The last pre date of the night was awkward. He was a middle aged man and he smelled of whiskey and cigarettes. Before I can introduce myself he starts muttering incoherent words. Something along the lines of fix and drains for a living.
I ask how he likes plumbing for a living, but he tells me he’s an iron worker. Let’s just say he glared at me from across the table. I zoned out for the rest of that conversation.
After that speed dating trial run, I came out feeling confident about having conversations with random people. Don’t let the possibility of a bad first impression get you down. You might not find love on the first go, but you’ll leave knowing you had a good time.
