15 Hygge Items Perfect For Cozying Up Your Space

For those who have heard of the concept of Hygge but need a refresher to solidify what it means, Hygge is a Danish word translating to “coziness”, and is more of a feeling than a noun. Adopting the Hygge way of life means appreciating the here and now, making life just a little warmer and more beautiful. With today’s perpetual push towards career advancement and success, it can be a struggle to find a few moments in the day to just be grateful for what you have. But by adding a few warm, inviting items to your home, you’ll be well on your way to making daily screen time breaks and occasional tea and cookie parties with loved ones. Here are 15 Hygge items perfect for cozying up your space.

1. Candle(s)

Electricity is one of the best things we have. But when do we ever forgo fluorescent lighting in favor of glowing candles? Answer: not nearly enough. Heck, unless there’s a blackout, we may even forget we own any! We’ve got to change that! Not only are candles a great way to save energy, but they instantly add an element of softness and warmth to your home. Plus, you can get them in amazing seasonal scents, such as cinnamon or pine.

2. Book(s)

With modern technology, it couldn’t be easier to read school and pleasure books alike on our devices. However, nothing beats the feeling of curling up with a great read, turning each page as you find out what happens next. Although it’s tricky to pinpoint exactly what kinds of books to stock up on for your Hygge– inspired space, we recommend checking out hardcover, vintage-looking classics, which both look beautiful and provide timeless entertainment. Like poetry? Turn to Christina Rosetti. More of a thriller person? Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein does not disappoint.

3. Woolen Blanket

A house without any throw blankets is no fun at all (how are we supposed to cuddle up during scary movies?). By adding a couple of woolen throw blankets to your space, you’ll be making your place seem much more inviting. We love the recent trend of big, hand-knitted blankets (although unless you’re an expert knitter, we would not recommend you make this at home), as their texture and color make them ideal for decoration and afternoon naps.

4. Vinyl Record Player

Music is such a gift, and taking out a vintage record and putting the needle on it makes music listening almost ritualistic. It’s surprising just how high-quality audio can be on a retro record player, too- it’s often just as loud and clear as a modern high-end speaker. Keep an eye out for one the next time you go thrift shopping.

5. Teapot

We’re so lucky that we can get so many wonderful flavors of tea (and usually at low prices). While taking a break in the middle of the day to enjoy a pot of tea with friends may seem like an outdated (albeit endearing) practice, it’s one that we could greatly benefit from! Pouring a steaming cup of Blackberry sage tea into lovely ceramic teacups and catching up with your roommates may be just what you need before you hit the books that night.

6. Board Game

Board games are one of the best investments you can make: for $25, you’ve got the potential for years of fun times with friends! Taking a break from video or phone games and playing a game like Scrabble or Monopoly is great for your brain, and it may surprise you just how invested you become in winning! A little healthy competition is sure to break the ice at any parties you may host (wink) and a few board games are a wonderful source of merriment, especially in the colder months.

7. Storage Basket

You’ve got to have a place to put all of those woolen items at the end of the day, right? Getting a couple of large woven baskets for your living room or bedroom will help tremendously with clean-up and give an earthy, comforting element wherever they’re placed.

8. Wooden Baking Utensil(s)

Adorable? Check. Useful? Double-check. Won’t leave a weird metal taste in your chocolate chip cookies? Why weren’t we wooden utensil devotees all along?

9. Large Coffee Mug

Sometimes the most precious time we have in the day is the hour or os on weekend mornings when we can sip our coffee, read, and look outside. Hygge culture doesn’t stray from the coffee route and encourages the habit of making fresh coffee and sitting down for a bit before going into the day’s activities. And let’s be real- when it comes to coffee, more is better (just go slow)! So why not invest in a few larger, colorful coffee mugs to indulge in this rare and wonderful morning ritual?

10. Houseplant

Never underestimate the power of a little greenery. Houseplants are a great way of reminding you to take a little time out of your day to care for what’s right in front of you, and could even prove useful should you decide to make a home-cooked meal (if you get an herb like rosemary or basil).

When you can’t use candles, try incorporating fairy lights into your decor scheme to gently illuminate your house. Try looking out for types that shut off automatically after a few hours so you won’t have to buy a lifetime supply of triple-A’s.
