How To Use Beard Oil, Balm, And Wax

There are plenty of products out there to help you keep your beard looking and feeling its best, but you might not know how to use them. If you’re wondering what to get and where to get it, you’re in luck! We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about how to use beard oil, balm, and wax.

What is beard oil?

Beard oil is a blend of oils that is used to hydrate the skin under your beard and soften the hair.

How do you use it?

If you aren’t sure how to use beard oil, a good rule of thumb is to use a few drops right after you have washed your face. Just a few drops, though, because less is always more with a beard oil. If your beard is long enough you can comb it through with a beard comb, but otherwise you can just work it through  your beard with your hands.

Where can I get it?

Try to find a beard oil that is all natural, and a scent that you will enjoy. If you think a fragrance is going to bother you, try an unscented oil. Beard oil is sold at easily accessible places such as Target, Walgreens, or Amazon. These two oils are a good place to start:

What is beard balm?

A beard balm is similar to a beard oil in that it’s intended use is for moisturizing the skin and softening your beard. The only difference between beard balm and beard oil is that it is much thicker, so it can be used for styling, as well.

How do you use it?

Beard balm is a little trickier than beard oil because of how thick it is. Again, less is more. If you use too much balm, you could easily clog your pores, which you definitely don’t want. Apply after you have washed your face, and make sure to exfoliate your skin a few times a week. Try a smaller dab first, warm it with your hands, and massage through your beard.

Where can I get it?

Just as with beard oil, you will want to look for a product that is all natural. Remember, beard balm can sometimes contain wax, so pay attention to products that may have ingredients such as beeswax. You can purchase a good beard balm at places you might not have thought to look, like Urban Outfitters or Etsy. Take a look at these two we found on Amazon:

What is beard wax?

Beard wax is similar to beard balm, but it contains a higher concentration of ingredients like beeswax. While the point of beard balm is to condition your beard, the main idea of beard wax is to style your beard. Basically, if you are going to use a beard wax, you should be using a little bit of beard oil or balm beforehand.

How do you use it?

After you use a small amount of beard oil or balm, scoop out a tiny bit – like the size of your nail – and rub the wax between your palms. Once the wax is all melted and ready to go, apply to your beard and style it as you would like.

Where can I get it?

Like the beard oil and balm, pay attention to the ingredients in the beard wax you buy. Look for whether or not it is natural, has a fragrance, and if it has any sort of moisturizing properties that would conflict with an oil or balm. While you can find beard wax at Walmart, Etsy, or Target,  we like these two on Amazon:
