How To Pull Off The Crochet Trend Like A Pro This Year

Everywhere I look I see crochet this, crochet that. The crochet trend is seriously sweeping the nation. I am not, however, opposed to how popular it’s become. As a lover of all things crochet related, let me share with you my tips for pulling off the crochet trend this year:

1. Incorporate Crochet Into Your Tops

Let’s start off with the basics. The most common way I’ve seen people wearing crochet is on top. Personally, I love the long sleeve look above. The crochet trend makes every outfit comfy and chic, like I could just take a nap in that top. To complement the neutral tones of that top, while also highlighting the pop of blue, I’d recommend styling this with beige pants. Since the shirt is already pretty loud, you’ll want to go for more simple accessories. A sleek bun, dainty gold hoops and a necklace, and chunky sneakers would look amazing here.

Now that it’s summer, you’ll probably want to opt for something more lightweight. Crochet halter tops are huge right now, and rightfully so. They’re the perfect piece for any boho, beachy outfit. Accessorize with a headscarf and hoops for some extra bohemian flare! As for the bottoms, you might want to wear something looser to counteract the tight, cropped fit of the top. Drawstring baggy pants pair really well with crochet tanks, as shown in the picture above. I also love this look with white linen pants and platform sandals.

2. …Crochet Bottoms, Too!

You can be as bold as you want with pants like these. I’m seriously obsessed. This entire look is giving music festival in the 70’s; I love the floral detailing around the waist and ankles, and the drawstring belt? Precious. Since crochet bottoms tend to be busy, you might choose to wear a more basic shirt on top. If you want to channel your inner hippie, throw on a front-tie top, like the one in the picture. I can definitely see this outfit with big hoops and bangles.

Of course, there are ways to wear crochet bottoms that aren’t boho. Here’s how I recommend styling the crochet trend for those that don’t consider their aesthetic to be bohemian. First, find a pair of crochet bottoms that feel congruent with your style. These pink heart pants totally fit my vibe. There are tons of different styles to choose from, depending on where you shop.

3. Wear It On The Outside

Embrace your inner grandma. You can participate in the crochet trend by incorporating it into your outerwear. You really can’t go wrong with a crochet cardigan; they make it feel like you’re wearing a blanket wherever you go. With pieces like these, it’s best to keep the rest of the outfit simple. Style your patterned cardigan with a basic pair of blue jeans, a tee shirt, and Converse. If you want, you can rock a pair of Converse that match one of the colors in your sweater. I also recommend going up a few sizes on your cardigan. The bigger, the cozier!

4. Ditch The Pants

…And wear a romper! I think this crochet romper is the cutest thing. Just look at the blend of colors, the flare sleeves, the flattering neckline…I need to buy this. Rompers like these are must-haves for the summer. Imagine wearing this to a beach party, or getting cocktails with friends. Any excuse to wear this, I would gladly take. I can also see someone wearing this on a beachy vacation, whether it’s to Mexico or Greece.

Maxi or midi, you’re sure to make a splash in a crochet dress. Again, they come in so many patterns and fits that there’s something for everyone. Like rompers, these dresses are great for any summer event. I would recommend wearing it to a concert or as a beach coverup, but that choice is ultimately up to you. In terms of accessories, I’d also advise keeping it pretty bare. All you really need is some hoops and a staple necklace.

5. Accessorize With Crochet

Another way to accessorize a crochet outfit is—you guessed it—with more crochet. Hats like these are probably my favorite crochet accessories. You can find a variety of crochet hats on Etsy, from frog ones to striped ones. The one in the picture is adorable, with similar products available on Etsy. I especially love the rim—it looks like a cloud at the end of a rainbow. Bags are also a good option for the crochet trend. Again, I’ve seen so many crochet bags on Etsy, but if you’re at the mall, try Urban Outfitters. Crochet bags are of a sturdy enough material to carry your groceries or hold your textbooks in.

Guess what? You don’t even have to wear crochet to get involved in the crochet trend. Instead, you can buy a cute crochet object, like these water bottle holder. The amount of crochet items I’ve seen are countless, from steering wheel covers to phone cases. You can even decorate your dorm room with crochet blankets and coasters.

6. Attempt A DIY

One option to getting your dream crochet outfit is by making it yourself. If you’re crafty or want to be, try actually crocheting. It might take some time before you can create the perfect top, but don’t give up. Learning how to crochet yourself is the most sustainable way to take part in the crochet trend. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on clothes that you might get sick of in years to come, make something you’re proud to wear. How cool would it be to tell people that you actually handcrafted your top? I’ve tried crocheting once before, and it was so therapeutic. If you’re a stressed-out college student, treat crocheting as a form of relaxation.

As you can see, there’s not a shortage of ways to partake in the crochet trend. Anything crochet is automatically cute. I can’t wait to see what other looks come out of this trend!
