How to Pull Off a Sexy Halloween Costume with Class

Halloween is one of the best weekends of the fall semester. The holiday spirit runs throughout the entire campus; from the jack-o-lantern dorm decorations, to themed parties, and of course, the costumes. Picking out a Halloween costume can be stressful. If you want to wear a sexy Halloween costume for the spooky holiday, more power to you! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to flaunt what you got on Halloween. However, if you go too far, you may end up getting slut-shamed by your peers. Here are a few tips to help you pick a great costume and navigate the fine line between sexy and slutty on Halloween.

1. Be Original.

I can guarantee that you will see a sexy cat, a sexy nurse and a sexy cop on Halloween. But why would you want to be a carbon copy of every other college girl around the country? Choose something that nobody else would think of as sexy, like a sexy judge instead of a cop, or a sexy dentist instead of a nurse or doctor. If you want to avoid the occupational costumes, why not try something popular from this year? You could go political as Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, or even Left Shark!

*Side note: Make sure your costume could not possibly offend somebody. Avoid any culturally or racially insensitive costumes (ex: Indian, geisha) based on tragedies or controversial issues (ex: Cecil the Lion, victim of controversial issue, murderer), or anything referencing sexual orientation or gender identity (ex: Caitlyn Jenner).

2. DIY!

Even better if you make your own costume! Extravagant costumes can be really expensive for college students. You’re also not going to wear that costume again in the near future, so don’t waste your money. DIY costumes are always really creative and fun. There’s a moment of grief when you find a great outfit in a costume store, try it on, and it looks too revealing. With DIY costumes, you have control over how your outfit looks. If you don’t want to make your dress super short or show off your midriff, you don’t have to. Also, nobody else will have your one-of-a-kind outfit!

3. Wear Underwear… Not ONLY Underwear.

Think about it: if you wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing it on a normal night out, why would you wear it for Halloween? Wearing your normal underwear, putting on wings, and claiming you’re a Victoria’s Secret angel (even worse, claiming you’re just an angel) is neither creative nor subtle. Costumes can be sexy without being skimpy. Full bodysuits keep you comfortable but show off your curves.

Dresses with cleavage are also okay, as long as you’re not flashing everyone that night. Besides, wouldn’t you rather enjoy yourself on Halloween and have a great time with friends than worry about bearing it all for the whole world to see?

4. Check Yourself.

Make sure you can bend down or sit down without flashing anybody. Jump a bit in place to make sure your chest is still in your costume. Make sure you can walk and dance all night in 6 inch heels. This may seem like a tedious or even unnecessary process, but you will be glad you did a thorough test. You do not want any costume mishaps wrecking your night making you a popular topic of discussion the next day.

5. Be Confident.

If you’re wearing a costume that is too revealing or makes you uncomfortable, you may begin to feel insecure and anxious all night. “Is this dress too short?” “Can they see my bra?” “Do I look okay?” These thoughts can result in constant runs to the bathroom for costume inspections, which leads to a not so fun night. What you think is sexy or slutty, may be different from what others think is sexy or slutty.

Unless you put a white bed sheet over your head and call yourself a ghost, some people will probably find your costume too promiscuous. Although their opinion may be valid, it’s YOUR costume. Be proud of it and strut with your head held high! Unless your costume is sexy Quasimodo or something… Happy Halloween!
