2022 has opened the door for all different kinds of aesthetics. One of my favorites among them has been the coastal granddaughter aesthetic. Some of you may be wondering what that means—I’m here to clarify. The coastal granddaughter is a youthful take on the coastal granddaughter style, distinguished by neutral tones, light and airy clothes, and a nautical flare. Here are some outfits you can replicate:
Most coastal granddaughter outfits stick with neutral colors; you can balance out the grays and whites with something more vibrant. Sage green, bright pink, and baby blue work well with this aesthetic. I especially love this white blouse, green pants combination…adorable. Summer is when the coastal granddaughter thrives, so don’t be afraid to stand out. If you want a subtle pop of color, add a dainty necklace to the ensemble. The multicolor beaded necklace really brings the outfit in the picture together. It reminds me of pearls in the ocean, which suits the coastal granddaughter vibe.
If you don’t have a ton of color in your wardrobe, try a monochrome look instead. White and light tan are key components to the coastal granddaughter color scheme. The all-white outfit above is perfect for cool summer nights, or early fall days. Every coastal granddaughter should own a loose pair of white jeans and a button-up shirt in their closet. Layer a preppy sweater vest on top, and you’re Cape Cod ready.
Blue button-up shirts are the little black dresses of the coastal granddaughter style. They’re easy to find, and if you look in the right places, they can be affordable too. I found my striped blue button-up in the men’s section of a Goodwill. Don’t judge—the quality, fit, and brand is amazing. I opted for a more oversized style, so I could use it as a beach cover up. My go-to outfit for the summer in my striped button-up with white linen pants, brown sandals, and pearl drop earrings. Books are important accessories to carry around, too. How else will you spend all those lazy days at the beach?
Make waves this season in a short tiered dress. Layered dresses are perfect for dinners by the ocean, seaside picnics, and all the other fancy occasions the summer has in store. To steal the look in the picture above, you’ll need some matching jewelry too. Matching jewelry complements the simplicity of the dress. The pearl earrings and peal necklace are dazzling here, and I love how they’re reminiscent of the white dots on the dress. Complete the look with a pair of wedges and some beachy waves.
Forget PB&Js and burgers and fries. Baggy pants and crop tops are the best duo ever. You can make the look fit with the coastal granddaughter aesthetic. All you need is a solid color crop top and a pair of drawstring shorts. If you want to elevate the outfit, throw on an oversized linen shirt, gold rings, and square sunglasses. I would wear this while running errands, walking along the shore, or hanging out on my deck with my friends. It’s cute, comfy, and coastal to a T.
No, these are not pajama pants. Gingham is a necessity for the coastal granddaughter aesthetic. The best way to wear it, in my opinion, is as bottoms. They’re a great way to add a different pattern to your outfit, without it being too busy. Gingham pants pair nicely with a baggy, solid colored sweater, an Olaplex bun, and small gold hoops. This cute and comfy look will keep you warm when you’re watching the sunset on the beach.
Maxi skirts are my beloveds. They can take the place of pants in any outfit to make you look more elegant. Not to mention, they fit perfectly with the coastal granddaughter aesthetic. Imagine this: you’re biking around town in a maxi skirt, picking up an iced coffee and a book before you head to the beach. Everyone looks your way—who is this cool and stylish person? That’s the power of a maxi skirt…all eyes will be on you.
In order to REALLY commit to the coastal granddaughter aesthetic, you need to apply it to all of your outfits—pajamas included. Pajama sets are classy and cozy, as true to the coastal granddaughter style. They’ll instantly make you feel ten times more put together, even when you’re going to sleep. For bonus points, find a pajama set either in gingham or stripes. Like I said before, gingham is a pillar of coastal granddaughter-ness. Blue and white stripes are also essential to wear.
I’ll never not recommend overalls. What better way to liven up your outfit than by throwing on a pair of overalls? Better yet, they match the fun, summery energy of the coastal granddaughter. Denim overalls with a white shirt, gold and pearl accents, and sneakers is the way to go for chillier summer days. You can even copy this look at school, when summer is transitioning into fall. No matter how cold it gets, the coastal granddaughter lives on.
Headscarves will transform any outfit from dull to sophisticated. They’re a callback to retro glamorous looks, reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. If you don’t want the coastal breeze to tousle your hair, here’s the solution for you. For patterned hair scarves, I recommend pairing with a monochrome outfit, with splashes of other neutral colors (like brown, as shown in the pic). Statement sunglasses also emphasize the retroness of the look.
As you can see, you can do more than just bathing suits with the coastal granddaughter look. Take advantage of the last few weeks of summer with these bright, beachy outfits. It doesn’t matter if you live by the ocean—if you feel like being a coastal granddaughter, commit to it.
