Looking for work? Job-hunting can be really stressful and disheartening when you get a rejection. Here are some tips and tricks to increase your chances of getting hired at your dream job!
The first step in getting hired is to go over your resume and state your experience. This is your chance to list all the professional experience that you have done over the years so that the employer will know you have accumulated practice. The employer could also ask for a curriculum vitae (CV) instead of your resume, which is a longer and more in-depth explanation of your professional experience.
If you are applying for specific work, try to cater your resume to the job you are applying for by including specific information and key words found in the job description. If your resume tends to sound long winded, then you can edit out your earliest or least relevant experience from your list of past employment.
Mentioning your skills is a vital part of getting hired. Whether it be on your resume, CV, or in a professional email you should always mention the skills that you have. This is a good way for the employer to get to know you as an individual and see what kind of services you could provide to the position.
Examples of some skills could be how many words per minute (WPM) you can write, your general attitude in the workplace, whether you can work in a teamwork environment or not, the programs or software you are able to work with, and even your ability to lead. As you can see, skills can be varied so you can separate them into soft skills and hard skills. Soft skills would be your personal attributes and how well you can work with others. Strong skills can be characterized as personal management and the abilities you know.
Certifications are a great way to enhance your chances of getting hired. In a day and age where most jobs at least require a college degree, and where most young adults already have one, competition for placement can be tough. If you don’t already have connections in your field then a good thing to invest in are certifications in your line of study.
Most certifications can be done online, and these will give you the practical knowledge that you would need while certifying you in a specific area. Employers are always looking for an employee that can bring something different to the workplace and getting certified is a sure-fire way to do that.
Volunteering is a good thing to mention and may help you in getting hired. Employers will become interested and intrigued in those that are passionate enough and willing enough to work for free in a field of their interest. The volunteer work doesn’t necessarily have to align with your professional experience, and in fact, volunteering in a field completely different from your own will impress any employer. They will get to see how much of a well-rounded individual you are with interests outside of your daily life, which will improve their view of you and may lead you into getting hired.
Adding a cover letter to your resume, or CV, is an additional step that will help in getting you hired. Employers will usually mention in the job description that they would like a cover letter, and even if they don’t, adding a one will certainly set you apart from the other applicants. This is a good chance to explain to the employer why you would like to work for them, your relevant experience, and what you could bring to the job that others can’t.
Finally, emailing the employer may encourage your efforts in getting hired. By sending an email to the employer and checking up with them you are highlighting your continued interest in the job, which will impress them. Even after a phone interview, or a one-on-one interview, it is always a good idea to send the employer an email to thank them for their time and consideration in meeting with you.
