How To Have A Virtual Easter Event This Year

Celebrating a holiday like Easter is an important tradition for many families, but what happens when you need to have a virtual Easter event? Although an Easter egg hunt definitely won’t be the same without all your friends and family physically running around looking for eggs, there are many festive things you can do this year from the comfort and safety of your own homes during your virtual Easter event.

Step One: Preparations

The first step to any virtual event is to schedule it with those you are inviting. Make sure to send out a Zoom invite, if that’s the digital platform you’ll be using, and test out any links ahead of time to avoid all the weird back and forth that can happen when technology just isn’t cooperating.

If Zoom isn’t part of your everyday life, or if you use Zoom way too much, you can also use FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or Facebook as a way to host your virtual Easter event. You might find that you like one platform better than another! For instance, Zoom puts a 40-minute limit on group meetings of more than two people if you aren’t an upgraded member. Forty minutes might be the perfect amount of time for some groups, but if you hope to celebrate longer, maybe choose a different platform for your virtual Easter event!

Step Two: Food

The main decision should probably be whether this is a before, after, or during Easter dinner party. Do you want to chat about what you’re eating, cooking, or what you already ate? A family meal might be really meaningful to you and your loved ones, and it’s important to honor traditions that help fuel us through the year, especially this one!

If someone might not be cooking for themselves, like your Grandma or that one friend, you can always get everyone to pitch in to surprise them with an Easter dinner delivered to their door. You can all cook something extra and bring it to them if you’re close enough, or you can pre-order it from somewhere local to them.

Step Three: Activities

If you’re wondering what you can do other than catch up with your virtual Easter event guests, you’ve come to the right place.

First, you could all plan to decorate eggs together! This is a time-consuming activity that is best done while socializing. It is more fun to decorate eggs with other people so you can compare colors and designs, and your virtual Easter event is the perfect time to do so. Here is a video on how to make Easter eggs if you haven’t before. Here is a link to egg safety, since you could possibly contract Salmonella from blowing out your un-sanitized Easter eggs. Make sure to collect all necessary ingredients ahead of time!

Another fun activity is a game called 7 Second Animal, which translates really well from real life to your virtual Easter event. In this game, the judge for the round chooses something for the group and then everyone draws that thing. After the judge counts that seven seconds have gone by (timed or not), everyone will hold up their drawings and the judge will choose the winner. The next judge will be the next person in the ‘circle’ and so on. The person with the most winning drawings will be the winner, but it’s really about being silly and having fun. A great game to play with drinks because it gets even sillier!

Speaking of drinks, your virtual Easter event could be a great time to make really fancy, delicious, and festive Easter drinks. Why not make the activity about consuming impressive craft cocktails? Nobody is driving, so y’all can have as many refills as feels right! Here are one, two, and three recipes that are absolutely dessert drinks. You can be an adult and eat Easter candy at the same time, and putting candy in drinks is a great way to do just that.

Lastly, if playing board games is your favorite part of the holidays, you can play many of them online during your virtual Easter event. If all of your party guests own the same game, you can all set up in the same way and manipulate your own respective boards, although this is quite complicated, especially with more complex games. To simplify, you can check out this article, which has information about playing virtual board games!

Step Four: Decorations

Obviously, the party will be more fun with decorations! Send a little box of decorations to each of your guests so that you all match, or so you each have a cute little theme that is all your own. You could even do a ‘secret bunny’ and have each party guest send a little pack of decorations to another guest, Secret Santa style. The great thing about ‘secret bunny’ is that it can also turn into an activity if you all vote for a winning decorator, and guess who sent which decorations!

Make sure to hang decorations in the backdrop of your virtual Easter event screen so you aren’t *just* in your kitchen. Yes, you could easily choose a springy virtual backdrop, but that isn’t exactly as special. Plus, you can decorate your whole space so that you personally feel like you are at a party in your own home. Important details.

Also, dress up yourself! One of the great joys of holidays is wearing something that you might not usually wear. Don’t give up on your fire Easter outfit just because you are having a virtual Easter event this year. Instead, celebrate springtime by wearing those beautiful colors that make you smile.

Step Five: Party

The point of hosting a virtual Easter event is to enjoy it, so however you choose to host your event, make sure it’s something you’ll really enjoy! Eat brunch together if that will fill you with warmth, decorate eggs if you want a creative release, drink some really crazy Easter candy cocktails if you just want to loosen up. There are many joys about Easter, and you should celebrate in a way that helps you feel most hopeful. After all, isn’t Easter all about hope? Let yourself feel it.
