Quarantine has all had us stressing a little more than we probably should from worrying about getting sick or cancelling plans or trying to keep up with work or school. It can be hard to know when the right time is to calm our nerves when our whole routine is disjointed or how to go about it in the best way. Everyone relaxes differently; some like to soak up a good book, some like to each a large bowl of mac and cheese. Perhaps a healthier way to unwind and take our mind off of everything is to go to spa. While these may be closed around your house for the time being, you can give yourself a little love and self-care right in the comfort of your own home. Read on to find the best ways to give yourself an at-home spa treatment that will make you wishing quarantine would never end.
Have you ever been to a spa and they are playing loud music, you can hear video games in the background or a dog barking? No! To give yourself the true spa experience, you need to be in a distraction free environment with no outside noises. Just you, your thoughts and some music if you choose to listen to some tunes. Some people find peace in sitting in soothing bath water, some like to relax in their bed, some like to meditate on the floor. It all depends on your mood and where you feel you can gather the most energy from.
The next step is to figure out the products you want to use to replenish your skin, nails and body. If you have a special someone or roommate that you live with, they can also help you out with a massage or foot rub if that interests you. Spa time can also incorporate manicures, pedicures, foot baths or just giving yourself a little self care and pampering like through face masks, scrubs or eye cucumbers. An at-home spa can also consist of reading a good book or just listening to some soothing music to promote relaxation. Figure out what works best for you and collect all your products beforehand so you will not have to worry about what to do next in the thick of things.
A little bit of music can set the tone for your at-home spa. Throw on some classical music or some smooth jazz to set the mood. Music is not an essential part of a spa routine but throwing in some headphones or music on a bluetooth speaker can help keep your thoughts away from outside distractions and put your mind and body at peace. Some people also like to sit in complete silence so they can hear their thoughts clearly. Figure out what you like so try out music one day and then the next without. Soon, you will find a routine that works best for you and your relaxation.
The perfect way to begin to relax and ease into your at-home spa is to start with a bath that will relax all the muscles in your body and calm all your senses from head to toe. You can even surround your bathtub with candles to set the mood, read a book while soaking or set up an iPad or tablet to watch some of your favorite shows or movies. You can even sip on a hot cup of tea while in the tub to also calm your nerves before bed or just before you start the rest of your day. When you get out of the bath be sure to drench your body in essential oils or moisturizer to soothe and rejuvenate the skin.
Pampering yourself can mean a lot of different things for different people. This can be wearing a face mask, a hair mask, putting cucumbers over your eyes to brighten the area around your eyes, giving yourself a foot bath and pedicure, manicure, or all of the above. The order that I recommend pampering yourself is once you have finished applying your body lotions and essential oils is to dress yourself in a fluffy robe or comfortable pajama set. Apply a face mask and relax as someone or yourself gives you a soothing massage from head to toe. Once you have achieved all these steps, you can move on to the next, which is the manicure and pedicure portion of the at-home spa. Use a foot bath if you would like buff, cut and file down your fingernails and toenails and a fresh new coat of polish to give yourself a fresh new look.
Part of soaking up the whole at-home spa experience is taking the whole day to thoroughly relax and detach yourself from anything that may be causing additional stress. This is why many people choose to dedicate their self care days to Sunday, when tasks and responsibilities seem to be more minimal. Dedicate a whole day of the week to just focusing on you, your thoughts and your well-being. Choose a day when you know you will have little to nothing to do and start your at-home spa treatment either at the beginning or ending of your day. Start at the beginning with the intention of bringing energy into your day and start at the end of your day with the intention of bringing peace and relaxation into your day.
There is no right or wrong way to give yourself an at-home spa treatment. Everything you do during your spa day should be with the intention of bringing you positive energy, peace and relaxation. Dedicate your at-home spa day to a day that is less hectic than usual to fully soak up the experience, free of any distractions, stressors or loud noises. Experiment each week with different products, with the music on or off and see what works best for you and your body to find a suitable routine.
