Are you a busy college student looking to give back to others in any way you can? Then this list is for you! We all want to be able to help others and improve our community, so here are some tips since it can be difficult to get started.
Slow down in your everyday routine to notice those around you and to help when needed. You’ll be surprised at how much good you can do just by slowing down and providing assistance when you can. Whether that means helping someone carry a bunch of books, purchasing food for the person behind you in line, helping a fellow classmate understand a subject that you understand. The small things in life are the easiest and best ways to dedicate your time to helping others.
Volunteering is a great way to help others, put something great on your resume, and to dedicate more time and effort into something that interests you. In addition to helping others, you will be learning more about a subject or area that interests you such as animals, veterans, or children. Look up some volunteer programs within your cities or remote programs and decide which ones interest you the most. By volunteering you are improving the world around you, and also improving yourself by networking with people and learning new things. You will feel extremely helpful and proud of the work that you and your fellow volunteers will have accomplished.
You don’t have to be a billionaire to donate a few items to worthy charities. A lot of charities depend on donations or spend a lot of their own money to keep themselves afloat. Donating canned goods and other items such as paper towels, blankets, tools, toys, and other things are not too expensive for you and will make a huge impact on the charity. Donate just a few items or go to town at your local grocery store to make their day.
Taking your time to tutor other students or younger children is a great way for you to give back without you spending any money whatsoever. If you thrive in a certain subject, you can help someone else who isn’t doing as well and maybe they can even help you in return with a subject that you may not excel in. You can tutor other classmates or children who are even younger than you are. Tutoring will not only be free for you to do, but will also help you in staying on your own toes in the subject. By tutoring, you are helping others understand and overcome something that they maybe thought they would never understand. You will begin to feel extremely proud of your tutees and you will have some great experience and recommendations for your resume.
Chances are your university or school always has great events happening throughout the semesters that they need plenty of help and volunteers with. Check your school’s calendar of events to see if there are any events you would be interested in. There are also plenty of great clubs that pertain to a lot of different interests. Joining a school organization will help you meet new people, devote your time to something you are really passionate about, and will look fabulous on your resume.
If you love your school as much as I love mine, I am sure you would want to give back so that other people can gain from the same things you did. Organizations and events are only as good as the people running them, so be the change you want to see and make your dreams come to life by helping those around you be as successful as they can. A few suggestions include joining Dance Marathon, Habitat for Humanity, and Student Government.
Giving blood is another great way to give back because you are literally saving lives and it is completely free for you to do! You may even be rewarded with something like pizza or a t-shirt. Giving blood doesn’t take long and you are giving someone one of the best things you can, a better life.
Whenever we are lucky enough to have a teacher that we really love, the best way to give back to them is with a hand-written note. Thank you letters are extremely cheap to buy at any grocery or convenience store and your teacher will be very touched at your time and effort. When someone makes a special impact on us, we should be eternally grateful and should express our appreciation. Teachers will obviously be grateful for any “thank you” being yelled across the classroom on the last day or an email, but they will always be able to keep and read a beautifully written thank you card.
The men and women of fire and police departments put their lives on the line every day to ensure our safety. Although we can never fully repay them for the sacrifices that they and their families make, one thing we can do is try to show them our appreciation with donations. Either donating directly to the stations or baking some fresh and delicious goods, they will appreciate the effort. It is not that expensive or time-consuming to bake goods and it will show them just how much you care.
