How NOT To Lose An Entire Day From Your Hangover

Let’s talk hangovers. And let’s not call them anything else, like “feeling under the weather”, or “feeling rough”, or “just tired”… unless you only drank ginger ale the night before, the thudding in your brain and the knot in your stomach is a hangover. We all have had them, and we probably aren’t smart enough to never get one again, so what can be done to minimize the aftermath of a night spent partying a little too hard? While there isn’t any magical pill, come on science, to cure a hangover, there are some tricks and tips to easing the pain and not spend the day in a dark bedroom with a left over pizza box. Here are some tips on how to get rid of a hangover.

Heat Pad

I have a heat pad because I am a girl and get cramps… but that’s not the only use for it. I tend to get headache hangovers instead of gut hangover (side note: anyone else feel like there are two types of hangovers, head or stomach?), and when I wake up after a night of drinking, I am mostly likely welcomed by a horrible pain at the base of my skull. Enter heat pad; placing the heat at the spot of pain does freaking wonders for my hangover. It allows me to fall back asleep through the pain and usually wake up with the hangover drastically reduced. Seriously, the heat pad is worth its weight in gold.

Water

You already know that hangovers have a strong tie to dehydration so just drink the dang water. Put it next to your bed and drink it as soon as you wake up, then drink it some more. It will help you in the hours of pain to come. There’s no surefire way when it comes to how to get rid of a hangover, but water will definitely help.

Shower

I have no science behind this at all, but I still claim that showers help cure hangovers. Next time you are laying in bed until 2pm with the curtains drawn, zombie crawl yourself to the shower. I will literally sit in a hot shower for 30 minutes, waiting to feel a little bit more human… and it usually works. Something about the hot water easing the muscles in the body really allows you to move past the undead stage of a hangover.

Food

Here’s a kicker; don’t eat the greasy food… it’s not going to help. I don’t know who started the rumor that greasy food helps a hangover, but they probably just enjoyed eating McDonald’s and cold pizza for breakfast. If you honestly want to feel better and regain some energy, you need to feed your body appropriately. No one is telling you to drink a kale smoothie when you have gut rot, but maybe consider the avocado toast or egg white omelet, instead of the drive through.

Fresh Air

My mom always said that there’s nothing some fresh air won’t help, and while she probably wouldn’t want me to tie her motherly advice to hangovers, it still rings true. If nothing else works, and you are still feeling like a shell of a person, get outside. Go for a very slow walk or simply sit on your back deck drinking water. The air will make you feel alive and awake… it might even make you say those familiar words, “I’m never drinking…” you know the rest.
