How to Get Ready For the Whole Day in 10 Minutes

Oh no! You’ve overslept, and you’ve only got a few minutes to get yourself to your first class of the day! Maybe you were partying, working on homework, or spending too much time binging on Netflix, but whatever way it’s happened, you’ve got to go now! How to get ready is your big question right now, with minutes to spare, and most of those will be spent getting you to class! Do you take the bus, or can you afford to spend the time walking? Would it kill you to go in those heels you wanted to wear today, thinking you’d have enough time to walk carefully?

What do you do? Do you even know how to get ready so fast without forgetting something? What if you don’t have your homework? Did you even print it last night? Not to fear, just read this article on how to get ready, and you’ll be out the door before you can say Jack Robinson!

Pre-plan your outfit

Have something ready the night before. Take three minutes in the PM to plan and organize your outfit. Either lay it on the chair nearby or at the foot of your bed so that as soon as you’re awake, you can grab and go. This is how to get ready: pre-plan! Lay out all your artifacts for the day, from hair accessories to shoes, from bracelets to bangles. Then, you aren’t stuck coordinating colors and wasting precious seconds to get yourself out the door. Knowing what you’ll wear beforehand can spare you up to five minutes. All you have to do in the morning is get dressed if everything is already laid out!

Prepare your meal beforehand

Again, pre-planning is the key! Part of learning how to get ready is being prepared in every aspect. This includes meals! Whether you make a sandwich or a full-blown three course dinner, you must have something laid aside for yourself. Keep it in the fridge if you must, but then leave a note on your door that reminds you to grab it before you leave. Make sure you do not forget your lunch: going the entire day without eating is horrible, and having to sidetrack to go to the crowded cafeteria is worse if you don’t have the time to be doing it. Please, don’t forget to get your food, even if you have to eat on the run!

Caffeine on hand

Find a way to have some form of caffeinated drink ready at your command. If your school has apps that allow you to pre-order drinks for easy pickup, take advantage of it the night before. Set up your preferred drink, pay if at all possible, and then run to grab it on the way to class. If you can’t do that, pool together with your roommates and buy an instant coffee maker. This will save you time and energy if you can press a button and have it ready almost immediately after the fact. If you can have your coffee in minutes, do whatever it takes to get it. You have to know how to get ready based on what your school allows, and take advantage of ever single opportunity possible.

Streamline departure

Go in an order! Dress rapidly and with purpose. Skip the makeup if at all possible, even if you think you look horrible, because in the end, that should be the last thing on your mind when it comes to getting ready. Brush your teeth, get everything from the kitchen, grab your bag, and go. Have everything possible by the door so that you are not stuck searching for that one paper on your desk. Print everything out and put it in your bag beforehand so that you aren’t left scrambling. Part of knowing how to get ready is knowing where everything is before you need it, and putting it in an easy-to-access place for a quick departure.

Don’t look at the clock!

This will make you panic, no doubt. Checking how long you have doesn’t only take up precious seconds, it also makes you worry about how much more you have to get down in such a short amount of time. You cannot check your phone anyway, or at least you shouldn’t be, because it will cause anxiety to flare up. Your best bet is to go as fast as possible and check your phone when you have left the dorm room. That way, you can determine how much time you have left to get to your desired location and move across campus accordingly. Again, do not look at the clock until you are gone! Determining how to get ready and how much time you have to do so only holds you up even more.

Two minutes of meditation

If you can manage it at all, take two minutes for yourself and remember to sit back. Meditate. Take deep breaths, and prepare yourself for the day while prepping your body to move. Take those seconds to prioritize your moments: make sure you grab everything that you need before you leave, and make sure you know the quickest way to get to where you’re going. Or, if that will stress you out more, take those seconds instead to remember that everything will be okay. Remember to breathe, and calm down as much as possible. You will think much more clearly when you are calm, and this will help you be certain of what you need to do.

Knowing how to get ready in the morning is an essential part of college life. Being able to do it on a whim is even more so, because everyone oversleeps at one point or another. The most important thing to remember is that things will work out either way, as long as you don’t let this become a habit. Remember to take a second and evaluate what you need to do, no matter how much time you have, because being certain of your path is the best way forward.
