How To Finally Master The Art Of Dying Your Hair At Home

Cannot afford the salon visit or looking to learn how to dye your hair at home? Follow these tips on how to dye your hair at home and achieve salon-quality hair!

1. Do not wash your hair for two days

Believe it or not, the color holds better on dirty hair so you want to avoid washing your hair for 48 hours before dying it.

2. Ditch the boxed dye

Your hair stylist probably talks about boxed dye as if it is the worse thing in the world for your hair. The problem with boxed dye is that it comes with a generic developer so depending on your original hair color, your hair might lift differently. So do not let the model on the box convince you that your dark brown hair will become ash blonde. Instead, go to Sally’s Beauty Salon and choose from their vast selection of hair color and pair it with the correct developer. The developers will be labeled volume 1o, volume 20, volume 30, and volume 40. Be very careful with your selection or the results can be tragic! A volume 10 developer will only change your color by a single shade and it is best if you want to go darker or if you do not need to lift the color to a lighter shade. This is best to use if you have a sensitive scalp or extremely damaged hair. A volume 20 developer will change your hair up by one or two shades, while a volume 30 developer can change your color up to 4 shades; this ideal is you want to go lighter. Avoid a volume 40 developer. This will change your hair drastically and can be extremely damaging. It is best to leave it up to the professionals when it comes to volume 40 developer.

3. Use a hair dye brush

You might be used to the little bottle that comes with boxed hair dye. However, it is better to use a hair dye brush when you are dying your hair at home because the color will blend more easily, and you are less likely to miss any spots.

4. Use lip balm or vaseline around hairline

Nothing is more annoying than scrubbing the hair dye off your forehead and hairline. To prevent this, apply lip balm and vaseline around your hairline before you dye it to prevent you from having dye marks on your skin.

5. Work in sections

When dying your hair at home, nobody applies the hair dye straight onto their head without brushing and sectioning it off first. To get the color fully on your hair, divide your hair in 4 to 6 sections and work each section at a time.

6. Always start with your roots

Your roots always need to be worked first since the color needs to stay on longer there. With your hair sectioned off, gently use a hair dye brush to coat your hair with the dye.

7. Use two mirrors

You are going to need to see the back of your head and when you are dying your hair at home, you probably do not have anyone else around to check it for you. By using the bathroom mirror and a hand held mirror, check the back of your head to make sure you didn’t miss any spots.

8. Create your own gown

To create your own gown, cut off holes in a large trash bag for your arms and head and slide it over you. Now you have a gown to wear while dying your hair. It is certainly not the most glamorous thing to wear, but at least your clothes won’t be destroyed.

9. Use a toner

Dying your hair at home isn’t always easy. If you are going lighter, use a toner to get rid of any brassiness. Nobody wants their blonde hair to look orange.
