Being single isn’t always perceived as a positive state of being in life. Society is so caught up in the idealization of love and romance that we tend to look down upon those who can’t find it.
If you’re single and having a hard time enjoying it, then maybe you need to find better ways of spending your time other than scrolling through your newsfeed of friends who are all getting married and having children. Despite what society may tell you, there are plenty of ways to appreciate your singlehood and here’s how.
Despite what you may think, always having someone there besides you may actually be quite a nuisance. When you’re single, you have no one to answer to. If you want to travel to another country, you can. If you want to dance with some attractive guy at the club, you can. If you want to completely change your style or get a new haircut, you can.
You don’t have anyone there, giving you advice or telling you what to do. Not that relationships dim your light, but while in a relationship you will always have to keep in mind that other person. Being single means you get to think for yourself. You have nothing and no one keeping you grounded. This means you are able to change, move around and become someone completely different, if that’s something that you want to do.
Sometimes we get so caught up in the lives of those who are not single. We focus on the friends and family members that seem so much further in accomplishing their goals in love. This focus is only going to drag you down. You have to realize that there are others just like you that are single and still looking for love.
The difference between you and them may be that they are actually enjoying their freedom of singlehood, while you’re caught in the social media buzz around you’re taken friends. If you spend more time doing what you love, with people in similar situations as you—you’ll come to realize that it’s not bad at all.
A lot of couples get into relationships out of loneliness. We don’t see this in their bombarding photos of happy expressions and beautiful wedding gowns. You need to realize there’s a reason for being single and that’s the time you are able to fall in love with yourself. When in a relationship, we tend to think so much about what we do for that other person. When you are single, you get to focus on what you can do for yourself.
Work on that novel you always dreamed about. Discover new friendships in new cities. Try the most popular foods around the world. These are the things you get to do when you’re not tied down in a relationship. Love with another person will come eventually, but you should appreciate all the love you can give to yourself before it does.
Love with that one special person is a very rewarding feeling, but we tend to forget about all the other relationships we have to offer. Being a daughter, a son, a sister, a best friend, a roommate, a coworker—we forget how beneficial these relationships tend to be in life because we focus so much on romantic ones. When you’re single, you get to spend your time with numerous amounts of people and not just one. You can host a dinner party and surround yourself with your closest group of friends, reminding yourself that you don’t have to feel alone just because you haven’t a boyfriend or girlfriend yet.
We can gain so much from friendships and tend to forget this. When you’re single, you get the oportunity to really use these other relationships to your advantage. Just because you’re single, doesn’t mean you’re alone. There are plenty of other ways to enjoy yourself and life without the constant worry of finding love from just one person.
