10 Tips On How To Drink More Water When It Slips Your Mind

Water is a necessity, and every living cell in our body needs it to function properly. While the human body can survive about three weeks without food, water is a different story as we can only survive approximately a week without it. Water is essential for everything from clear skin to joint lubrication to body temperature regulation. Additionally, if you don’t drink enough water throughout the day, especially if you are drinking diuretics like coffee, you will be prone to headaches from dehydration and will have trouble concentrating. Personally, I struggle with drinking enough water because plain, still water is so bland! I have to force and remind myself to drink it throughout the day or I just won’t. Here are 10 tips for how to drink more water if you generally forget to.

1. Download an app.

My friend turned me on to My Water Balance awhile ago, which is a great app that will remind you throughout the day to keep hydrating. There are other variations of this app which will calculate the amount of water you should drink based on your weight, and you can keep track of how hydrated you’re staying. The only downside here, in my opinion, is that I do not drink out of Poland Spring or other plastic water bottles, so sometimes I am unsure of exactly how much I have consumed.

2. Invest in a high tech or marked water bottle.

There are water bottles out there like the Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle that you can invest in which will not only hook up to your phone but also light up when you need to drink more. This way, you’ll never forget to drink water again. They solve the problem of guessing how many ounces you’re drinking because you’re always drinking the same quantity, and some of them can track how many times you refill the bottle so that you don’t have to. I am totally saving up for one of these. Dehydration ain’t no joke!

3. Add some bubbly to your life!

No not champagne! I’m talking about seltzer or sparkling water (quite frankly I don’t know the difference). Since drinking still water makes me about as excited as work on Monday mornings, I needed an alternative, and adding bubbles was the answer. If buying lots of cans/bottles of this type of water is your hesitation since it can get pricey the consider investing in a soda stream. I love mine! 10/10, would recommend on Yelp.

4. Infuse your water.

Choose a combination of fruits and veggies, cut them thinly (maybe get fancy and crush up some herbs) fill with cold fresh water and voila! So natural, so refreshing, and you will finish a full water bottle of it before you even notice it. It’ll remind you of being at the spa.

5. Add a splash of juice to your water.

Not a ton, but just a splash of juice (lemon juice, orange juice, lemonade etc) can spice up your hydration efforts in a great way. If you love having a glass of orange juice in the morning but want to cut down on sugar this is a great alternative.

6. Eat fruits and veggies that contain a high water content.

If you can’t even bear the thought of consuming tons of liquid each day, one of the best ways how to drink more water is to eat it! Cucumber, cantaloupe, celery, strawberries, oranges, and so many other fruits and vegetables have very high water content, so eat up.

7. Keep your water bottle in sight.

Out of sight out of mind, right? If you want to be reminded to hydrate then keeping your water in plain sight is the easiest way how to drink more water with minimal effort.

8. Drink a glass of water before each meal.

We all eat three meals a day, so if you make it a point to drink one eight ounce glass of water before each meal, you will be automatically closer to your daily goal. In addition, if you want to shed a few pounds, drinking warm water before eating can help with that.

9. Stick to a 1-1 rule when you go out.

If you are really trying to figure out how to drink more water, opt for a 1-1 rule when you’re out on the weekends. In between every drink you have, match it with a glass of water. Your body will thank you not only that night but also the next day when your hangover isn’t making you want to die.

10. Drink more water throughout the day.

I hate drinking water because it makes you go to the bathroom all of the time! So annoying. However, it is even more annoying to wake up multiple times during the night because you need to use the restroom. When you disrupt your sleep, you’re not only going to be cranky, but you’ll be less likely to reach for the water and more likely to drink soda/sugary drinks. Stop the cycle! Drink water earlier in the day.
