The way people choose to decorate their space says a lot about them. The art on the walls, the colors, whether the plants are alive or dead showcase the personality of the decorator. And the apartments in Friends are no different. Chandler and Joey’s apartment is a bachelor pad filled with beer, foosball, and farm animals.
And across the hall lies Monica and Rachel’s apartment. The girls’ apartment is wonderfully decorated, with so much personality in every nook and cranny. Monica Geller’s apartment is total #goals. So here’s how to decorate your space like hers!
One aspect of Monica’s interior design style that stands out the most is her use of color. Her walls are purple, her kitchen features teal, and her bedroom is painted pink. Not to mention the amazing black and white checkered tile in her bathroom. Monica’s use of color is so great because it creates personality, visual interest, and each space feels separate.
And the obvious answer to the question of how to decorate like Monica Geller would be to paint your walls! But if you can’t paint or simply don’t want to commit, add color with your furniture, curtains, throw blankets and pillows, and rugs.
In Monica’s apartment, nothing matches, yet somehow everything complements everything else. For example, all of the chairs around her kitchen table are different, her sofas aren’t a set, but rather a little mismatched, and her side tables in the living room are different from each other as well. This gives the vibe that much of her furniture was thrifted, which is a logical assumption considering she starts the series in season one as a chef. Thrifting furniture can be a little risky, but it can also pay off as you end up with cute, quirky furniture for pennies on the dollar.
Monica doesn’t have much wall space. She has the built-in in her kitchen and the floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto her patio. But the wall space she does have, she uses for French-style art. She has one painting hanging above her television in the living room, and one above her bed in her room.
French-style art is usually colorful and sometimes features beautiful women. But you’re choice of art doesn’t have to be French-style. Branch out and find pieces that speak to you.
What’s great about Monica’s apartment is that even though she’s insanely clean, she still allows room for personal and quirky items throughout her space. This is really what makes her apartment such a great personal space: the homemade pickles jar, the floral curtains, and, of course, the picture frame around her peephole. These touches are what make it Monica’s space.
So when decorating your own space, have as many meaningful little objects around your apartment as possible. They’ll add both character and happiness to your space.
If there’s one thing we know about Monica Geller, it’s that she’s a clean freak with a propensity for organization. Monica has a place for everything, and everything is always in its place. Her apartment is tidy even though she has a lot of belongings. Take Monica’s kitchen, for instance.
She has tons of mugs, different colored plates, and pots and pans. But there’s still a sense of order. In order to create the ultimate Monica Geller look-a-like space, organization is key.
