The ability to customize your wardrobe takes any ordinary outfit to the next level because it instantly becomes one-of-a-kind. The changing of seasons from fall to summer brings new trends: denim jackets, patterned pants, and sweaters galore! But when everyone is experiencing the same seasonal transition, they’re all packing away their summer wardrobe in exchange for such fall styles. So with everyone indulging in the same fuzzy sweaters, how do you set your style apart this upcoming fall?
All the cool kids are doing it! What’s great about thrifting is that you’re bound to find pieces of clothing that are unique. They’re unique either because they’re vintage and clothing wasn’t produced in mass quantities like it is today or because they’ve already been customized through years and years of wear. Thrifting is a lot of work and isn’t for the faint of heart. Finding the best pieces usually takes looking through tons and tons of racks of clothing, but the pay off is huge when you come across a sweater or blouse that looks perfectly vintage and fits like a glove. And chances are you aren’t going to run into anyone on the street or in the office wearing the same blouse. After you’ve realized the wonderful benefits of thrifting, pay it forward by taking your old and forgotten clothes to a thrift store near you.

We can all agree that a denim jacket is a must have for fall. But if this is true, and we all agree it’s true, then that means we all have denim jackets! So there needs to be a way to customize our denim jackets to set them apart from every other jacket on the street. Enter patches and pins. Both patches and pins are a great way to customize your denim jacket. Patches come in all shapes and sizes so you can really show off your personality with each one. Maybe you strive to get a patch from every city you’ve visited, or maybe a patch for every band you’ve seen live. There are tons of ways to customize your denim with patches. And the same is true with pins. Enamel pins are perfect to represent your love for Shakespeare, Stranger Things, and everything in between.

Accessories are the easiest way to customize your wardrobe. Let’s say you’re rocking your favorite go-to outfit today: white tee, black skinnies, and your Adidas Stan Smiths. Unfortunately, you and every other 20-something is planning on wearing that outfit today. So you gotta customize it. Choose a jacket, either denim or leather. Choose a purse, maybe a mini backpack, a designer bag, or a tote with a quote. Next, pick out and put on your favorite jewelry, your newest sunglasses, and maybe even a hat. And since we’re going accessory crazy, try switching out your white shoelaces for glittery ones! Your classic outfit has just been vamped up and made to be totally original.

Everyone needs a signature color, a color to bring you into every one of your outfits. Find a color you love, the one that you know looks amazing on you, and the one you feel most confident in. And bam! You’ve found your signature color. What’s so cool about a signature color is that you can add it to any outfit for a pop of color and to make your outfit one-of-a-kind. Look for purses, jewelry, shoes, and sweaters in your color and pair them with your favorite outfit. Obviously, you won’t plan your whole wardrobe around this one color, but you’ll create a cohesive personal style when you manage to add red or yellow or whatever your color is to a few of your best-loved ‘fits.

Fall is the season for textures and patterns. Since the heat is subsiding, and we’re no longer trying to wear the least amount of clothing possible, it’s time to experiment with different fabrics and patterns. And this is also a way to customize your style. Try a wool jacket, a cashmere sweater, or a pair of plaid pants. If you have to dress professionally for work, then it can feel impossible to customize a button-down dress shirt and slacks. But a plaid blazer (with a hint of your signature color, of course) can add a whole lot of you into this otherwise boring outfit. Jackets and pants both come in a lot of different fabrics including corduroy, tweed, and velvet. All of these add a fun and personal touch to your wardrobe.
