Student Survival 101 – How To Cure A Cold In College

Autumn is here and with every day it’s getting a little colder and colder. Especially in the UK, the rain sprinkles on us most of the days now, there are strong winds and the sun just seems to not come out that often. As students we have a lot of things to do during the day, we run around the campus, sometimes we miss a meal or two and we defiantly don’t always get enough sleep at night. And when Friday finally comes instead of staying in, we party until the sun comes up, leaving us, maybe a little happier, but more exhausted and weak than ever. All of that combined is a recipe for a nasty cold. This is why I created a list of tips on how to cure a cold in college!

1. Sleep, sleep, sleep!

When you’re sick, your body needs rest to properly recover from whatever is attacking it. That’s why make sure to get enough sleep every day. I know that sometimes it’s hard to get a good night’s sleep, but when you catch a cold this is one of the main things you should stick to. Health is more important, you could still work your butt off during the day, but going to bed early will only do you good.

2. Tea is now your new best friend

No matter what you’re doing, whether it’s watching Netflix or writing an essay, try to have a hot steaming cup of tea next to you. You can also try to add ginger, lemon or honey to it, to warm yourself up even more and soothe the throat. Just make sure to stay hydrated! You can be sure this will help you cure a cold.

3. Air you room

This might sound a little weird at first, but it’s actually super important. When you’re coughing, all of your nasty bacteria or viruses remain in the air. So if you’re staying in your room the whole day, you’re breathing all of that back. That’s why try to open the window at least once a day, maybe in the morning or right before going to bed. However, don’t stay in that room, try to move somewhere where it’s still going to be warm!

4. Eat healthily

Most people when they are sick don’t feel like eating at all and I get that, but if you want to get better you need to eat, and that food better be healthy. Your body needs energy to fight this cold, so support it by giving it all the nutrients it wants. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen try making soups or smoothies, oatmeal with some fruits would be good too. It won’t upset your stomach and it will fill you with vitamins!

5. Take long, hot showers

They will help your body relax, soothe any muscle pains and put you in a better mood. A bath would be even better, but I don’t think many students have them in their flats or student accommodations. This will be also really nicely refreshing, especially if you’ve been sweating a little under your sheets. This will definitely help you cure a cold.

6. Wash your bed sheets

It sounds like a lot of work, but believe me, it’s good for you. When you start feeling better and the cold is finally leaving your body for good, changing your bedsheet is a must. It will be fresh again, without all the sweat and bacteria. There is something about getting into freshly washed sheets that makes me feel like a newborn human. What is more, if you haven’t changed your bedding for a while, no matter if you’re sick or not you should think about washing it. Gross.
