How To Create An Outdoor Getaway On Your Tiny Apartment Porch
It’s no secret that spending time outside can do wonders for your mood and your health, but when you’re crammed into a small apartment with no yard to spend time in, you might be wondering how to turn your tiny patio into a small outdoor getaway. Lucky for you, this is a project I recently took on so I have some easy and inexpensive tips you use.
Create a seating area
Seating is key. If you have no place to sit, you’re probably not going to want to be on your patio for long. Whether you get actual chairs and a table, or those cute throw cushions, once you have a comfortable place to sit outside, you’ll spend more time out there.
Add some plants
Plants make everything feel much more like an escape, so when creating your outdoor escape, you’ll need at least one. I have five plants, but you can use as many as you want. And if you don’t have a green thumb, get some fake plants! Same look with really none of the responsibility.
Hang lights
As soon as I hung lights on my patio, I wanted to be out there even more. I love bonfires late at night and obviously, that’s not something you can really enjoy from home when you live in an apartment, so I thought lights would give a similar light effect and make my patio feel a bit cozier – and I was right. You can use standard outdoor string lights or you can get fancy and buy outdoor lights that have a little extra to them, like the Edison bulb style.
Add curtains
This is something you can do if you really want to go all out creating your outdoor getaway. These curtains can be sheer so light can shine through, or something a bit more substantial to give you a bit more privacy.
Get a citronella candle
Bugs. Are. Terrible pests. Getting a citronella candle can help because they’re supposed to repel bugs. Mine seems to do wonders and I bought a single wick candle, but you can get a two or three wick candle if you want a stronger candle. Plus, the flame from the candle gives off tiny bonfire vibes that I really enjoy.
Incorporate some outdoor decor, like wind chimes
There are so many outdoor decorations that you can pick up for your patio space and there are so many different styles of everything. I’m a fan of things that hang, like wind chimes because it saves floor space, but you can use anything that fits your taste and the feel that you’re going for with your patio space. If you want more of a backyard feel, you can get some turf or grow some grass in a planter or kiddie pool, or even add some bigger rocks as an accent piece.
Invest in a nice outdoor rug
Rugs can be quite expensive but they make a world of difference in any space they are in. If you live in an apartment, unless you are living in a luxury apartment, odds are that the building you live in is older or has very basic design elements – meaning it’s pretty plain. There’s nothing wrong with basic and plain, but when you’re creating an outdoor getaway you need a little more than just plain. Adding a rug to your patio can bring the design up to the next level and really tie everything together.
