When you feel disconnected from your sorority, just remember, you are just as much part of your sorority as every other sister is. The day you decided to don your Greek letter combination, you became part of a group. The whole is a sum of its parts and you have equal contribution to your reputation, values, and standards as the other girls. There may be times you feel like you don’t fit in, but try and ask yourself what you are trying to fit into. Joining a sorority is not about molding to some expectation. It is about joining a group of women who have your back. There might be 200 people in your chapter and not everyone will be your best friend. But if you are lucky enough, you may find a handful of close friends you can turn to for anything and 195 more who would be there for you if you needed it.
That said, joining a sorority is not for everyone and you may not be in the right one for you. There are obligations and dues and, at times, drama that should stay in high school. If these cons overcome the pros then disaffiliation may be the correct path. Don’t worry about losing the friends you did make. If ditching your letters means they ditch you, then you definitely made the right choice.
Movies make us think a sorority churns out cookie cutter replicas. It’s 200 “srat girl” gluten free, raisin bran cookies that are all best friends. In reality, a sorority is an assorted box of baked goods. Some treats go together better than others, but they all belong in the same container. If you feel like the lone chocolate chip cookie in a batch of brownies, I get it and I’ve been there. Try and remember that no baked good (or person) is truly superior to another. You’re still a damn delicious dessert and all those brownies are lucky to be with you.
