How To Confidently Rock 70s Fashion In 2020

Say what you want about the 70s, but they knew how to rock some awesome clothes. Here are some ways that you can take inspiration from popular fashion trends in the 70s and confidently wear them today in 2020.

Bell Bottoms/Flare Jeans

I’ve seen an increase in flare jeans coming back and I’m here for it. Gone are the days where women can only wear skinny jeans. A little flare at the bottom of your jeans gives them more character and draws the eye down your legs. Pair medium-wash flare jeans with a loose and flowy blouse, a floppy hat and heeled booties for a hippie look that will draw great attention. You can also opt for a black pair of bell bottoms, and throw a denim jacket over a crop top for contrast between your jeans and jacket. Heeled shoes with these style pants will accentuate your legs even more, and bold jewelry helps you stand out even more.

Shift Dresses

Shift dresses were big in the 70s, and thank goodness they’re coming back today, because they are so comfortable. You can do so much with them, and that versatility sure does come in handy. Wear one with a sweater on top to trick people into thinking it’s a skirt and sweater combo. This also keeps you a bit warmer on those chilly fall days! Put a jean jacket on top of a patterned shift dress, paired with a pair of sneakers, for a more casual look. Wear a long cardigan to give the dress more layers, and a pair of tights underneath to make the colors pop more.

Jean Everything

Denim was one of the biggest fashion trends of the 70s, and I’m glad that trend has stuck around for as long as it has. The most simple is the denim jacket. This can be paired with almost any outfit. I love to throw a jean jacket over a hooded sweatshirt and leggings for a cozy fall-inspired look. Pair similar wash jeans with the same color jean jacket for a bolder “all denim everything” look, to truly match those worn in the 70s. Jean vests can be worn over a sweater and pair of jeans for another jean-on-jean look, but with the sweater under the vest breaking up all the denim. Pick up a denim skirt to wear with a graphic tee and sneakers for a comfy casual look.

Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits are the long-legged cousin of the romper, and I love them. Similar to shift dresses, jumpsuits are great as a base layer that have so many different ways they can be dressed up and down. With a solid colored jumpsuit, take a flannel and tie it around your waist and wear a pair of sneakers for a casual weekend look. Dress up a jumpsuit with heels and a blazer. Bonus points if you jumpsuit is denim. If this is the case, put on a floppy hat and a cardigan for some added color to your outfit. Overalls are a safer version of the jumpsuit if that’s what you would rather wear. Pair a bold t-shirt under your overalls for a look you’ll love.

Pantsuits

Nothing makes you feel more professional than a two-piece pantsuit. Hillary Clinton loves them, and you should too. With so many color options, there are so many different ways to wear a pantsuit. Opt for a more neutral color, and wear a bolder color shirt underneath a top piece. Or, reverse it and wear a bold color jacket and pants. A pantsuit alone can be boring. Dress it up with a hat or a sassy scarf tied around your neck. Accentuate the length of your legs (and define the bell bottoms) with a pair of heels, or booties with a heel on them. This is an outfit that can be worn into your work office, out to lunch with friends, or even running errands on a weekend if you make it a bit more casual. Ditch the jacket and pair the bottoms with a graphic tee to dress it down a bit, and with a pair of Converse you’ve got an outfit that’s a bit more casual.

Crochet

This year I have really seen crochet clothing come back. From bathing suit tops to bralettes to sweaters, your possibilities to incorporate this fashion trend are endless. What’s fun about this trend is I have seen lot’s of small business pop up of people making and selling these tops. So in bringing back 70s fashion, you can also support a small business in the process. Pair a crochet crop top with a pair of high waster jeans and high-top shoes for a casual weekend outfit. Dress up a pair of leggings with a crochet cardigan and a bright colored shoe. Finally, pair a crochet bathing suit top with a beach cover up and gladiator sandals for a fun summer look that can be worn around any local beach town!

Over-the-Knee Boots

Made popular in the last few years by Ariana Grande, over-the-knee boots incorporate 70s fashion into more modern choices like pairing them with satin dresses or over jeans. Pick up a pair of suede over-the-knee boots to put over a lighter wash pair of jeans, and a graphic tee to top it off for a perfect going-out look. Wear a much shorter satin dress for a sexy look thats sleek and elegant. This look especially looks good with a leather pair of over-the-knee boots. Over-the-knee boots also pair nicely with a denim skirt and blouse for a more dressed up look. Don’t be intimidated by how over the top these shoes may seem. They can be dressed up or down depending on how you pair your outfit around them!

What 70s fashion looks are you incorporating into your outfits today in 2020? Is it lots of denim? Or perhaps a sassy pair of over-the-knee boots? Or are you supporting a small business and ordering a crochet bralette? Let us know!
