Living the single life is not always an easy thing to do, especially in today’s world. So many people look down on those who are single, just because they are not in a romantic relationship with another. Friends who are in a relationship may wish to help their single friends and try to match them up with another friend or colleague, or those who are single and have been in a past relationship may come across a happy couple walking across the street together and begin to pity themselves because of that sore sight. According to a writer of HealthyWay, Brooke Geller, the amount of value that is placed on being in a relationship is so substantial that it is often regarded as the only true way to feel complete or to have a sense of identity. That is far from true. As a woman who has been single for 5+ years, I can tell you that being single is one of the greatest gifts of all. If you are single and have the occasional blues and feel lonely because you are not in a relationship, then say no more because there is more to life than just finding Mr. Right. To help you out, here are some tips on how to best live up the single life.
One of the greatest benefits of being single is traveling. Now, I know traveling with your significant other is fun too, but traveling while you are single is the best, by far. Here is why. When you travel, whatever happens, stays there. Whether you are being conservative, covering less than the average amount of skin, dancing on a table like Freddie Krueger won best scare face, sitting at the bar, minding your own business, or acting on instinct and getting ready to do something incredibly stupid (whatever it maybe). Whatever the case may be, whatever happens, it will stay there. You do not have to worry about any expectations. You can act and live with an open mind when you travel. Whether you travel alone or with friends. It does not matter. It is all the same.
Being single does not necessarily mean that you are typically moping around in your living room or on the street because you are not in a romantic relationship. Instead, you are, or should be in a strong relationship, maybe multiple, with your friend(s). According to Roxy Zarrabi, a clinical psychologist, one of the major benefits of being single is having the time to spend quality time with friends. When you are living a single life, there is more time to build and develop strong relationships with friends. Deepening the friendship with genuine and wholehearted conversations, spending nights together, drinking wine and watching some Netflix, and, overall, being there for each other. It is important to have strong friendships. They take time to build. Luckily, when you are single you have all the time in the world. Your friendship is the only relationship you may be focused on when being single, and that is not necessarily a bad thing.
Doing things and going places by yourself is not always the first thing people see as a benefit when being single. Humans are naturally social creatures, so it makes sense why we would not want to do things and go places by ourselves. Though that is true, I suggest trying it before stating that you do not like it or want to do it. There are a few things that come with this benefit of being able to go and try doing things on your own. One is that you can make your itinerary. When making plans for yourself, you can plan your day according to how you want to spend it. You do not have to take into consideration your significant other’s desires or your friends’ ideas. Only yours. Going along with this, it is only natural to say that you can go at your pace throughout the day. There would be no rush to hurry through the streets of London so that your significant other can take you to the top of London’s Eye at sunset. There would be no hurrying through Lombard Street so that your friends can change into their bikinis, for Marshall’s Beach. It is all yours to plan and see-through, at whatever pace you want, too. Sometimes it is good to be alone and have time to yourself. With it, you can think only for yourself and decide what you want to do with your day, and how you want to spend it. It is only you that you have to worry about pleasing today.
When you are in a romantic relationship, taking care of yourself and being attentive to yourself and your needs can be difficult. Mainly because you are taking care of and keeping your attention on your significant other. When you are single, this is hardly an issue, and frankly is a huge benefit to living the single life. Your mind, body, and soul are what makeup who you are as a person, and you must remember to pay attention to those three about yourself. Taking care of your body is one of the key attributes that help keep your immune system, strength, and endurance in check. Not to mention having a healthy body keeps the mind from falling apart from some of life’s daily struggles (anxiety, depression, stress). Plus, it is a booster for your mood, whatever it may be during that time and day. That includes feeling lonely.
The last and most obvious of the best ways to live your single life is to just do you. Take that hour-long bath, pour yourself a glass of the Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992, binge watch all of the seasons of Friends, order that extra-large pizza and eat it by yourself, hike the Grand Canyon, cliff jump off of the Cliffs of Moher, jump out of a plane and skydive into the Great Hole, in Belize, swim with the dolphins, go snorkeling with sea turtles, dine under the Paris stars, on the Eiffel Tower, dance until the sun sets, in your living room, to Adam Lambert and Queen, wear your high school prom dress and take selfies. Be weird and have fun when you are single. What is the point of living the best part of every human’s life if you cannot say you had fun or had no regrets?
