How to be OK with being Single

Every girl dreams of finding her Prince Charming. Some of us are lucky enough to have found the one, but the rest of us have to be OK with being single.  After being unlucky in love during high school, I dreamed that college would allow me to reinvent myself and find my prince. As a rising junior, I’ve yet to find him. If any of you have every felt this way, you might find what I am about to say useful.

I felt discouraged and upset that I hadn’t found a guy in my two years of college. I’d been on dates during this time but those never led to anything. I got it in my head that I was the cause of all my bad dates, something had to be wrong with me because I was the reason that nothing ever worked out. I spent a few nights curled up in my room watching Netflix and crying as a result of such negative thinking. I convinced myself that I was unlovable and that I would end up alone.

My thought process changed after I broke my ankle over spring break. I spent the rest of the semester thinking and soul searching because I was essentially immobile. During this time I had an epiphany, I was missing what college is all about and I became OK with being single. I learned that I shouldn’t be stressing out over boys, or lack thereof, I should be enjoying myself and doing things that make me happy rather than dwelling on things that I can’t change. I’m now consciously making a point of making the best of my college years. Here are a few ways for you to do the same.

College is the place to find your bridesmaids, not your groom.

If you do find him then congratulations! But until then, you should be focusing on surrounding yourself with good people and making rewarding, meaningful friendships. It’s about finding that person or those people who will be by your side through all of the ups and downs. They’ll be there through the parties, great nights out, tear-filled Netflix marathons, and 2 a.m. McDonald’s runs. I have been lucky enough to find my people. If you haven’t found yours yet, keep looking!

Find your passion.

Whether it’s volunteering, singing, politics or playing board games, your campus may very well have a club or organization dedicated to the particular thing that interests you. If they don’t, start one! Clubs are great way to meet people, relieve stress, and just have fun. If you’re not sure what club you would like to join then dip your feet in the water by going to a few meetings to see how you feel about it.

Learn a new skill.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to cook? Or knit? College is the perfect place to learn a bunch of new skills. Many campus organizations offer free classes in a variety of subjects from cooking and knitting to modeling and photography. This is a great way to relax, make some great memories, and you never know who you’ll meet!

Travel!

There is no better time to travel than during your college years.  As a college student, you have many opportunities to travel. You can study abroad in a place you never dreamed you would be able to visit, take an alternative Spring Break trip, or get a group of friends together to embark on a road trip to some city you’ve always wanted to visit. Travel fair is usually much cheaper for college students than it is for everyone else. Take advantage of these amazing opportunities to travel while you can!

There will be plenty of time to find “the one” later on. Right now, enjoy the freedom of being single and focus on enjoying your time at school . Time flies by and you should be making the most of your college years. Prince Charming may find you when you least expect it, and the greatest thing of all is that you will be the best you when he does come along. You took this time to do what you wanted to do, and it will make your future relationship even better. What matters most is that you are enjoying every minute at college by doing things you love and being with people who make you happy!
