How To Battle Dry Skin In The Winter

Keeping your skin healthy in the wintertime can feel like a burden. But, the cold and dry air can quickly irritate your skin. With so many different skincare products, it can also feel impossible to find the perfect routine to keep your skin smooth and healthy during the colder months. But, it doesn’t have to be a headache. Here are a few ways to battle dry skin in the wintertime:

1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

The most important thing to do in the winter time is to keep your skin moisturized. It’s important to use thicker creams instead of lighter lotions in your skincare routine to effectively keep your skin hydrated. The cold air will dry out your skin within minutes, so it helps to always keep lotion on hand. There are so many options for travel-size lotions. The best lotion for battling dry skin is an unscented moisturizer with aloe or hydroluronic acid. But, for your face it is vital to use facial moisturizer. Regular lotion can clog your pores and irritate your facial skin. Keeping up a consistent skincare routine will help keep your skin looking beautiful. The best brands for moisturizers are CeraVe , Nivea, and Neutrogena.

2. Use Petroleum Jelly!

Old-fashioned Petroleum Jelly, such as Vaseline, has a plethora of uses. But, it is also great for battling dry skin in the winter. Petroleum Jelly can be used on your skin or your lips to keep them healthy and fresh in the winter. It can also be used on your face day and night to keep your skin looking healthy. Petroleum Jelly is an essential for the wintertime. It is a cheap alternative for more expensive skincare products and can be found at any local grocery store. Apply Vaseline on your face and lips before bed to keep your skin nourished for the next day.

3. Avoid Too Much Makeup

Makeup is a great way to be creative with your style and skills. But unfortunately, makeup isn’t great for your skincare in the wintertime. Some products can dry out your skin while out in the cold weather. So, it’s important to wear makeup that is also moisturizing or apply a facial moisturizer before applying makeup so your skin can stay hydrated. It’s also beneficial to wear a heavy cream underneath your makeup to keep the top layer of your skin hydrated and healthy. Wearing a hydrating lip balm instead of lipstick can also keep your lips moisturized and protected from the cold air. It is also beneficial to apply face mists throughout the day to keep your skin continuously hydrated and nourished.

4. Cover Your Skin and Face

Layering up and staying warm in the winter time is not only good for your health, but also your skin. If you consistently expose your skin to the cold weather it will quickly dry your skin out. So, it’s important to wear lots of layers and accessories to avoid the cold air. Balaclavas or scarves are a great way to cover up your face and neck while staying stylish. It’s also important to wear gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm and protected from the cold air. Also, it’s vital to protect your skin with sunscreen even on the cloudy days. Although it may look like the sun isn’t shining and the sky is gray, there is still a chance of the sun harming your skin, so it’s essential to apply sunscreen everyday before leaving the house even in the wintertime.

5. Exfoliate, Don’t Scrub!

When washing your skin and face, it’s important to gently exfoliate your skin to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. Scrubs and skincare tools can feel refreshing for your skin. But, they also easily irritate your skin, especially in the wintertime. Although they may seem refreshing and nourishing to your skin, it is harmful to use scrubs and tools on your skin in the wintertime. It’s important to use moisturizers and cleansers gently to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh. This rule doesn’t only apply to facial cleansing, but also while trying to keep your hands, arms, and legs smooth and hydrated.

6. Use a Humidifier

Investing in a humidifier or diffuser will help keep your house humid in the wintertime. The extra humidity will help hydrate your skin and keep your skin healthy. It’s important to battlel the dry outdoor air with some refreshing humidity in your home. You can also add essential oils to your difffuser to add humidity to your home while also dispensing a pleasant aroma. Essential oils also have many health benefits. Essential oils such as lavender and peppermint can also help battle the common cold which is very common during the winter season.

7. Avoid Hot Water

As tempting as a steaming hot shower may sound in the wintertime, it’s important to avoid scorching hot water. The hot water can quickly dry out your skin which can make it even more difficult to keep your skin hydrated and healthy in the winter. The hot water can strip the oils and hydration from your skin which makes it more susceptible to cracking and flaking. So, it’s essential to use lukewarm water to avoid any damage or irritation to your skin. It’s also important to moisturize your skin after your shower to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

8. Stay Hydrated!

Hydration is important all year round, but specifically in the wintertime to battle dry skin. Keeping a water bottle around everywhere you go is a simple and easy way to stay hydrated. Hydration will help keep your skin nourished and healthy in the winter time. Hydration can protect your skin from damage and help your body stay refreshed. There are so many different styles of water bottles for everyone. Your water bottle should become your new best friend, especially in the wintertime.
