10 Home Decor Trends To Do This Year

Home decor trends for this year are evolving from the picture-perfect designs with immaculate furniture and design pieces that form the home. There is no shortage of homes that are styled perfectly from online images to social media posts.

However, this level of perfection has lost its charm to home decor trends like japandi, wabi-sabi and other designs. As the interest of authenticity grows, so does the number of online searches for interior designs like japandi and wabi-sabi.

Wabi-Sabi

Wabi-sabi is a design that integrates a large portion to the natural elements, which is why this design incorporates materials like wood furniture, fabric art, artisanal accents, and ceramics from local furniture stores. This design does not need to match, but it needs to have a calm approach in designated rooms. Wabi-sabi is more than an interior design, it has a deeper meaning in Japanese culture.

According to Thomas Oppong from Medium.com, “. . . Wabi-sabi is a 15th century Japanese philosophy of accepting your imperfections and making the most of life. ‘Wabi’ is said to be defined as ‘rustic simplicity’ or ‘understanding elegance’ with a focus on a less-is-more mentality. ‘Sabi’ is translated to ‘take pleasure in the imperfect.’”

Wabi-sabi is a minimalist style, but it does not remove objects that are sentimental and essential to this authentic design. The design keeps possessions to a minimum by inviting only objects of sentimental value, beauty, utility, or a combination of all three elements in the home.

Japandi

Japandi is this year’s interior design style, which blends Japanese and Scandinavian styles in one uniform design. This Japanese and Scandinavian design is a minimalist style that is simple and functional in any designated room. The word ‘japandi’ is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian, which is a perfect example of Japandi’s united style. It is interesting to see these different styles from different parts of the world fit like a jigsaw puzzle.

Japandi’s Japanese and Scandinavian styles contrast in a good way: it is less casual than the Scandinavian design and it is more casual than the Japanese traditional style. The Japanese style is elegant, but it adds rustic elements from the Scandinavian style into it. These styles also have a different color palette. For instance, Scandinavian interiors tend to have a neutral palette, while the Japanese color palette consists of warm and cool colors.

Farmhouse Chic

Farmhouse chic is a modern approach to the rustic style, which was inspired by English-styled cottages in the country-side. This design has a shabby chic fashion to the design with hints of traditional elements mixed in to give this design the farmhouse aesthetic.

The farmhouse chic design achieves its style by using white or beige as its base colors to accentuate the nautical decorations in the space. This chic design also uses accent colors like lilac, turquoise, or soft yellows to give it the farmhouse look. The farmhouse chic design also achieves its style by using aged wood, upholstered patterned fabrics, plants, and vintage accessories to give your space character.

Modern Mid-Century

Modern Mid-century is the perfect middle-ground for two different styles. These two styles mix their different decorating elements into varying styles that fit your taste. This modern mid-century design is one of the home decor trends that has a few features that complete this look.

Like most of the designs, this look also shares an affinity for nature in the home by using natural materials for the design. The design has a simple, linear and clean formation of subtle elegance. This design eliminates unnecessary details like vases and other design pieces. This modern mid-century design uses industrial production elements, which are included in the look.

Industrial-Style

Industrial-style is one of the home decor trends that is known for its lofty style. This decorative style has an unpretentious prowess and visual appeal from the exposed brick structure to the materials used to finish the industrial-style.

Industrial-style takes the exposure of structures like the brick structure to touch up the look with steel and wood elements to make the space to make it have a more modern and rustic approach. This style can be mixed with retro, vintage styles or Nordic, rustic, or chic fashions depending on what other design you want to add to this industrial-style.

Structured Simplicity

The structured simplicity design has evolved from the Nordic Retreat home design trend from 2019.  This design, unlike other home decor trends, has stripped its style back with the purpose of creating a calm and comfy space to relax by making your space inviting for your family and friends.

The structured simplicity design has replaced the gray, black and white of hygge for neutral colors that create a warm atmosphere. This design trades the bold and bright colors for the soft neutral colors, which pairs up with pared-back accessories. The structured simplicity design uses the elements for thoughtful home choices, which comes from the trend of being aware of sustainability.

Bohemian/Boho Chic

The bohemian chic design, which is also known as the hippie, boho, or the gypsy style has become one of the home decor trends that gives value to the free, adventurous spirits that cling to avant-garde lifestyle. This design, like the other styles, also shares the same level of simplicity and nature.

The bohemian/boho chic design is characterized by its loose and casual style, its bold colors, natural materials to contrast with metallic details, and the nomadic elements like tribal designs and accessories for the home. This chic design also uses a variety of rich and creative prints, which could be in purple or blue tones (mainly in upholstery, carpets, or rugs).

Secondhand Sustainability

The secondhand sustainability design focuses on climate change and sustainability by using secondhand items, which is used throughout homes. Some interior designers are starting to take a stand in reducing waste, and home design trends are shifting towards the reusable and sustainable route.

This secondhand design is not only environmentally conscious, it also gives you the ability to customize and personalize your home with your own style. This particular home design trend is known for looking for the diamond-in-the-rough when it comes to well-made pieces in good condition or items that have great bones that can be restored to their natural beauty or redesigned to fit your taste.

By purchasing secondhand items for your home, you will have a larger supply of materials for a limited amount of money. If you do not purchase secondhand decor items, you go to shops like Kirklands or At Home for a limited supply of materials for an expensive amount of money.

Eclectic Glamour

The eclectic glamour design celebrates the nostalgic by evolving from the retro revival in 2019 to the bold, confident and sassy take on glamour. This re-imagined trend is taking it up a few notches with its mature look that channels the 1930’s sophisticated elegance with sensual undertones from the 1970’s opulence thrown into the mix.

This design reunites the new generation of design with vintage, shapely furniture with rounded curves and fluid shapes to take the stage within the elegant theme. This elegant theme reintroduces not only the 30’s and the 70’s, it also reintroduces the 1920’s occasional chairs with the scalloped shell-like backs and soft edges.

Maximalism

Maximalism, unlike minimalism, is about embracing the grandeur of the big and bold. Needless to say, some interior designers will have a field day with this home decor trend. This design, unlike most designs, is big and bold with a bright colors and patterns with gaudy decor and colorful, abstract paintings. It has a borderline sense of structure, but it is easy to leave the bold and lively aspect this design is trying to portray and tread into a busy and clustered vibe.
