Complete transparency here y’all, I had no idea what clarifying shampoo was until about five minutes ago. Thankfully, the internet is a thing, so I’m now an expert and ready to share my bountiful knowledge of haircare with you!
First off, what even is clarifying shampoo? Basically, it’s a deeper cleansing shampoo than typical. Every shampoo will rid your scalp of the basic dirt and grime build-up, but this shampoo goes deeper to get all the stuff that regular cleansers miss. It’s especially great for people who use a lot of hair care products.
So, for everyone who uses mousse, dry shampoo, texturizing spray, and the like: Using those products on your hair daily might make it look fabulous, but it’s actually creating a lot of built-up residue on your hair that most shampoos can’t break up. That’s where clarifying shampoos come into play!
Most hair care experts suggest rotating a clarifying shampoo into your routine once a week if you regularly use a lot of product in it. However, because clarifying shampoos are more intense, they can dry out and be harsh on some hair types. Especially for people with color treated hair, clarifying shampoos can strip it of the color. So for people with dry, damaged, or color treated hair, opt for a once a month routine.
Regardless of how often you use clarifying shampoo, it’s important to hydrate your hair afterward. Make sure to have a rich conditioner on hand! Or, for even more moisture, use a hydrating hair mask.
