Here’s Why Sleepovers Should Still Be A Friendship Requirement

Somewhere along the way, sleepovers became a thing of the past. The go-to method for birthday parties in elementary school became something that was only a memory. What fails to be acknowledged is how sleepovers function to build connections to other people. Here’s why sleepovers should still be a friendship requirement:

1. They’re Fun

It doesn’t matter how old you! Spending a night eating junk food, playing board games, and even making a few calls you might regret in the morning is a night well-spent. When you don’t have the energy for a night out or the funds to do so, having a sleepover with your college or even work pals can be a great alternative. You can get creative with the snacks or even stay on the healthier side if you must!

2. Open An Intimate Space

Sharing your house, room, or a sliver of your home life can seem like the scariest thing in the world. You don’t want people to judge you and it can be intimidating to let someone in. A sleepover is a great way to let people in when you’re ready. There is something about seeing where someone spends their alone time that adds to the friendship. You get a glimpse of who they are when no one’s looking and sharing these spaces should be a friendship requirement.

3. Pillow Talk

A term typically used to refer to couples sharing late night thoughts, but it can also be applied to sleepovers! Before a member of the group inevitably falls asleep, you can use the night sky to ask those random questions that pop into your head. Who was your first kiss? Do you ever have nightmares about running a 10K with a family on Thanksgiving? There is something about a sleepover environment that brings out the funny side while also attempting to dive deeper.

4. Entertainment Tastes

Depending on how you spend the night together, a sleepover should be a requirement, so you can find out if you share the same entertainment tastes. Wanting to share one of your favorite boy band albums with someone is something that should not be taken lightly! Choosing a movie to watch together or talking about your favorite television shows to binge can let you know a lot about a person. You may discover shared interests, or you could be introduced to a movie you wish you’d seen sooner!

5. The Nostalgia

Things do not ever have to be professional at a sleepover. You can be silly, wear your favorite pair of pajamas that no one ever sees, and you get to spend time with your friends. All these things have been easily granted to younger individuals when these aspects are exactly what adults crave. We need an environment where we can be our authentic selves and share that with those we are close to. Having a sleepover does not have to be a requirement for every weekend but it should be in your routine as an adult at some point.

6. Brings You Closer

I have yet to have a sleepover where I ended up feeling distanced from the other person. Whether you’re just meeting in college or you are trying to figure out a way to move from co-worker to friend, a sleepover could be the solution. Spending all night with someone or a group of people definitely changes the friendship dynamic in a way that I have only found to be positive. This may not always be the case, but I hope it works out in your favor!
