Here’s How To Be Successful On Depop

Whether you’re selling old clothes or thrifting items to sell for a higher profit, Depop is the go-to app for anything regarding second-hand clothing. So here are the best ways to be successful on Depop!

1. Take good quality photos

Surprisingly it’s not all about the item you’re listing, one really great way to gain followers and get likes on your item is to simply have good quality photos of it. Try taking photos of your item in natural lighting against either a plain or aesthetic background. It’s also a good idea to have the items styled on a model with clothes that complement the item, this gives the buyer more of an insight into what they’re buying and allows them to imagine it on themselves too!

2. Captioning your items properly is important!

You have to make sure you included as much as possible about your item in the caption, including hashtags so your item is more likely to pop up when searched. You absolutely must include the size, material, quality and brand of the item. I also find a great thing to include in your captions is a note about what you would wear the item with or the style inspo behind it. I also always include a sentence at the end saying to feel free to DM for any questions or offers. Overall, a more informed buyer is more likely to buy! Here’s a great example of a Depop caption from the account @betty_berry:

Khaki denim dungarees. A wardrobe staple with pockets and adjustable straps! Outfit inspo: All you need is a t shirt and a pair of converse for the cutest summer outfit. Size: Size M. Nicole is a size UK 6/8, 5ft8 for reference. Measurements: Waistband: 33″ Material: 100% cotton. Condition: Great vintage condition!

3. Get liking and following!

In order to sell your items on Depop efficiently, people need to know who you are. The best way to do this is to engage as much as possible on the app, the more you like and follow, the more people will respond to you. Since Depop is different from other social media like Instagram, it’s not a big deal at all to follow people or like photos and most times they’ll return the favour. A higher following on the app will also make people feel more comfortable buying your items as it seems to come from a more reliable source.

4. Make sure you’re making a profit!

If you’re selling items you’ve thrifted for example, you have to take into account more than what the original cost of the item is. Say you buy a T-shirt for £6 at a charity shop, then sell it for £8 on Depop, you actually won’t be making a very good profit because you need to take into account the price of shipping as well. This includes not only the cost to post the item but also what kind of parcel you use and what kind of postage. So you’re gonna have to do a bit of maths to make sure your item’s worth it!

5. Wait it out

Unless you’ve got thousands of followers on Depop it’s unlikely that you’ll sell your items instantly. You’ve just gotta give it time and hopefully, someone will eventually buy it. If your item isn’t doing very well, maybe lower the price or the cost of shipping, that usually gets more attention for items and helps it do a bit better!
