Herbal hair rinses are the best DIY zero-waste replacement for conditioner! Plus, they’re absolutely incredible for your hair and scalp. You can customize the hair rinse for your personal hair needs! If you’re looking to lower your impact on the planet all while achieving the best hair you’ve ever had in your entire life (or your money back, guaranteed), then keep on reading!

1. Rosemary and Thyme

Rosemary is known to add shine and also makes hair healthier and stronger! It’s a great conditioner and it also smells totally delicious. Mix rosemary with thyme to create a lovely smelling hair rinse that combats dandruff and oil while simultaneously adding moisture and shine!

To make, pour boiling water over 2-3 tbsp each of rosemary and thyme and leave for at least 30 minutes and up to 8 hours.

To use, strain out the herbs and pour over hair after washing. Rinse out or leave in.

Enjoy your healthier, happier hair!

2. Lavender and Tea Tree with Vinegar

Lavender helps to balance oil production, meaning that it’s perfect for those who struggle with dry or oily hair. It also helps stimulate hair growth. Tea tree is antibacterial and can help combat scalp acne and ingrown hairs. Apple cider vinegar is commonly used as a conditioner for those looking to go low waste or for those looking for softer, silkier hair.

To make, fill a jar with lavender and a few drops of tea tree oil. Cover with apple cider vinegar and leave in a dark place for 4-6 weeks. Strain out the lavender.

To use, add one to two tbsp of the vinegar rinse to 1 cup of water and pour over your hair after washing.

3. Nettle and Lemongrass

This may be a surprising combination, but hear me out! Nettle helps with hair growth and adds body and shine to the hair. It makes hair soft and can help with dandruff and excess oil. Lemongrass protects and strengthens hair. Try this herbal hair rinse out to achieve softer and stronger hair!

Pour boiling water over 2 tbsp each lemongrass and nettle and leave to sit overnight. Strain out herbs and use after shampoo.

4. Chamomile, Dandelion, and Elder Flower

If you’re trying to make a herbal hair rinse on a budget and you have very dry hair, this recipe is for you! Chamomile, dandelion, and elder flower are all known to help with dry hair and scalp. Elder flower helps repair damaged hair, dandelions add shine, and chamomile conditions and softens. Chamomile also has gentle lightening properties, which means you might find sunkissed highlights in your hair if you use this regularly! Dried chamomile is very cheap and easy to find – you can even take it from your teabags! Dandelion and elder flower are often quite easy to find on the side of the road if you know where to look!

Pour boiling water over 3 tbsp of each flower and leave overnight. Strain out the flowers. Pour over hair after washing.

5. Lavender Peppermint

As we know, lavender helps balance oils and encourages hair growth. If you need extra help with oily hair, add some peppermint! Peppermint helps to control excess oil. It also encourages hair growth!

Pour boiling water over 3 tbsp each of lavender and peppermint and leave overnight. Strain out the flowers. Pour over hair after washing and leave in or rinse out. Use regularly to achieve long, oil-free locks!
