We all know what it’s like to feel as though nothing will ever cheer you up, getting caught in a feeling of this sadness can be disheartening, but there are ways for you to move out of this feeling. So here are some helpful tips to try whenever you’re feeling down.
First things first! While it can be easy to feel as though it’s wrong to be sad, the truth is, we all feel down sometimes, and it’s completely normal. Just trying your best to spend time doing things that will boost your spirits can help, and it’s way better than beating yourself up for how you feel.
Staying inside and laying in bed all day may sound like the move, but when you’re feeling down, the best thing to do is get out of your house and stay busy. Whether it’s a quick run for your favorite coffee, a visit to a local art gallery, or even just wondering aimlessly around Target, anything is better than sitting and focusing on your sadness.
To quote Elle Woods, exercise gives you endorphins, and endorphins make you happy! Working out and moving your body is a great mood elevator and a fantastic way to focus your attention on something you can control rather than the emotions that hold you back. Do some yoga, go for a run, take a walk, or join a workout class to get you pumped. Anything that you can do to get both your body and your mind moving is an excellent start to feeling better.
Sometimes when we’re feeling down, it’s difficult to remember the little things in our life that bring us joy. Starting a gratitude journal is a great way to take a short time out of your day and write down all of the things that you’re grateful for. This is also great to look back on when you need a quick reminder, and all it takes is five minutes. Grab a pretty notebook, some colorful pens, and make this activity something beautiful that makes you smile when you read it.
It’s no secret that fresh air and sunlight can help make anyone feel better, so one of the best things to do when you’re feeling down is to get outside and soak it all in. Taking a long walk, riding your bike, gardening, or visiting a local outdoor garden can help boost your spirits. Enjoy the nature around you and take this time to unplug from the rest of the world.
It can be tempting to want to retreat from society when you’re feeling down, but sometimes, what you really need is time spent with people. People that know how to be with you and make you smile are the best to be around when you’re at a low point. Being with friends and family can help remind you of how great it can be to enjoy your time with them, and it helps get your mind off of everything else when you’re having a good time.
Most importantly, remind yourself that you will not feel this way forever. Nothing is permanent, and although it can feel like you’ll be sad forever, you won’t. More often than not, all it takes is a simple reminder that this feeling is not here to stay to get excited for what comes next.
