As many college students and young people know, a night of drinking leads to a day spent puking into the toilet and feeling regrettable about every life decision you ever made that lead you up to that point. So here are hangover remedies from around the world to cure you over your booze sickness!
In Germany, they have something called Rollmops, which are pickled herring fillets, rolled up and filled with something savory like green olives and pimento. The can be served on a skewer, and are bought ready to eat from jars or tubs. Rollmops are often served as Katerfrühstück, which translates to hangover breakfast, because it’s believed this salty, vinegar-soaked fish dish can restore electrolytes.
Pickle juice is known to be a very hydrating substance because it contains potassium and sodium, which hydrates you faster and for a longer period of time. It’s recommended for workouts and hangovers for this reason. It’s also rich with vitamins and antioxidants and after a night of boozing, you”re probably just feelin…gross and unhealthy, and need a good healthy boost. It can also help with pain associated with headaches and muscle cramping as a result of being dehydrated.
Honestly, I think I might just start drinking pickle juice now, hangover or not, all the benefits of this stuff sound pretty convincing.
Croissants and Café au Lait, is one of the simplest French hangover remedies to mimic. It’s basically like toast and coffee, which you’ve probably have heard of or already used yourself to cure your hangover. The fat and protein from the milk in a croissant can help boost your metabolism and get you feeling more awake and energized and hopefully less nausea. And the caffeine in the coffee does the same.
Another French hangover cure that is manageable if we live outside of the country is French onion soup. The broth is soothing and bread of the soup are soothing to the stomach, while the broth hydrates and repairs electrolytes. The bread boosts your metabolism and the protein from the cheese, and protein from the fat of the broth will you give you the pick-me-up you need to go on with your day.
After a night of drinking, we often feel the need to binge eat on greasy fast food. But greasy food is also ideal for hangovers. Introducing Britain’s hangover cure, bacon and eggs. A full English breakfast consists of bacon, eggs and toast (preferably with bacon grease), as its thought that greasy food soothes the stomach.
It’s also believed that bread can absorb the toxins of the alcohol in your stomach, so maybe that’s why we always want a cheeseburger before going to bed after hitting the bars. However, it’s sadly not true that bread can do this, but it the carbohydrates in bread can boost your metabolism. Additionally, the protein from the bacon and eggs is beneficial to your body as it repairs the amino acids in your system, diminished by alcohol.
So apparently Japan is like really into hangover cures. It’s their million…billion? dollar business thing, kind of like all those weight loss infomercials you see, but for hangover cures. And there are quite a few.
Miso Soup or Ramen are both hydrating from the broth, which can relieve your headache and calm your stomach, and not too heavy so they go down easily. These dishes both contain ginger, which is thought to soothe the stomach and prevent nausea. Additionally, the meat in the soups gives your body the protein it needs to feel more stable and alert and if you have kimchi with your miso or ramen, another pickled item, it may have the same or similar effects as drinking pickled juice.
Another Japanese hangover cure is Pocari Sweat, or Aquarius, which is Japan’s version of Gatorade that will hydrate you, and replenish your electrolytes.
