20 Things You’ve Done If You Grew Up In Hong Kong

Growing up in Hong Kong is an experience like no other. Hong Kong exposes a person to a culturally diversified environment that leads to becoming an open minded individual. But while growing up, many of us end up doing similar, if not the same things. Here are 20 things you have done if you grew up in Hong Kong.

1. Taken the MTR

Growing up in Hong Kong, one thing people learn to do is get around the city quickly at a cheap price. The MTR is top of the list for meeting both requirements.

2. Saved money on the MTR

Whether you’d like to admit it or not, everyone has definitely bought a concessionary ticket in an attempt to save money. For those of you reading thing, you know you’re guilty of it at least once.

3. Eaten Hong Kong’s illustrious street-food

One thing everyone has done while growing up here is eat at Hong Kong’s cheap, yet amazing street food stalls. Whether it’s the fish-balls, siu mai or egg waffles, we’ve all dished out cash for these delicious treats.

4. Eaten 7-11’s garlic noodles

Everyone growing up in Hong Kong knows about select 7-11’s snacks and where they serve the “garlic noodle” everyone craves once in a while. It would be an understatement to say this isn’t one of Hong Kong’s most loved foods.

5. Partied on a junk

Hong Kong is notoriously known for the sheer amount of junk party’s that take place. If you’ve been on one, you know the more booze, the better the party is.

6. Been to and partied at Lan Kwai Fong

Other than junk parties, every kid growing up in the 852 has been to Lan Kwai Fong, the party capital of Hong Kong. You’re bound to run into almost everyone and anyone you have met before in your life.

7. Taken a photo at the Lan Kwai Fong street sign

A first or second trip to Lan Kwai Fong isn’t complete without a photo under the street sign saying Lan Kwai Fong. Whether it was when we were 13 or 17, everyone has taken a photo underneath that street sign.

8. Been to the Rugby Sevens

Lets be honest here when I say, everyone growing up in Hong Kong has been to the HK Rugby Sevens at least once in their life. This is the one weekend a year where its a norm to get drunk and do stupid things instead of watching the rugby.

9. Gone to Clockenflap

Clockenflap is one of the most iconic events that takes place in Hong Kong and is always a sell out. While it’s considered a music event, it’s still an event that everyone goes to for the social aspect.

10. Had to go to Kumon

As a child, most kids would have had to go to Kumon as our parents made us. Hours and hours of endless math questions will never be forgotten.

11. Been to AIA Carnival

One of the coolest things that has come up in Hong Kong is the AIA carnival that opens up during the winter time here.

12. Stayed up to watch….

Now while this is aimed more toward sports fans, one thing that is an absolute pain for people in Hong Kong is the timing for sporting events. The World Cup, football and basketball seasons keep people up till the early hours of the morning.

13. Visited Disneyland

Probably the most iconic theme park in the world opened in Hong Kong in 2005, and it would be fair to say everyone who lives in Hong Kong has been there at least once.

14. Been to Ocean Park

As everyone grows up, the rides of Disneyland start to become less exciting. Ocean Park is the theme park that outdoes Disneyland in terms of thriller rides and waiting times.

One thing unique to Hong Kong is the use of octopus cards, which is essentially a refillable card that holds your money to be spent. Most people in Hong Kong have octopus cards and 90% of people will agree when I say that they have lost their octopus card at least once.

16. Mr Softee

One thing everyone loves is ice cream, and the closest thing to an ice cream truck we see in Hong Kong is Mr Softee’s soft serve ice cream.

17. Watched the fireworks

It’s fair to say everyone has watched the renowned fireworks, but its also fair to say it gets boring after the first few times.

18. Gone to Macau

One of the better trips for anyone going on a holiday from Hong Kong is Macau. Luxury hotels and it’s an hour away via ferry. If you live in Hong Kong you have definitely visited Macau.

19. Visited the Peak

Home to one of the most breathtaking views in Hong Kong. The Peak is a must see for anyone visiting.

20. Taken the Star Ferry

Finally, one of the most iconic things about Hong Kong is the Star Ferry. Since its start in 1880, it has been consistently running. While it is the cheapest way to get across the harbor, it is a unique experience for visitors to try.
