10 Gifs That Describe Those Annoying Questions Your Family Will Be Asking This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for sharing a meal with loved ones, catching up, and being thankful.  However, everything might not be all sunshine and rainbows when families come together in a small space.  It’s always awkward to see family you haven’t seen in ages and try to spark conversation.  Even worse- those even more awkward, stressful and prying questions they seem to ask you EVERY year.  Here are 20 gifs that describe those annoying questions your family will be asking this Thanksgiving.

1. “Are you dating anyone yet?”

Yep…still no.  Why is it that family yearns for you to be involved with someone and be in a relationship so badly? Being single is fun too, well kind of.  If this question come up this Thanksgiving, and the odds are high, be sure to tell your family member that, in the words of Jackie Burkhart, “If I could run across the beach into my own arms, I would.”

2. “How’s school?”

Well, actually I have 3 papers to write and a huge test on the very first day I return from thanksgiving break. But hey, everything’s fine.  I’m fine.  If this question happens to come up in conversation this thanksgiving, tell your family member that school can be very stressful and that you are trying your best.

3. “What ever happened to (insert name of ex that screwed you over)?”

One word: AWKWARD. In their defense, your family member obviously doesn’t know the details of the breakup and how much it has affected you.  The best way to handle this painfully awkward question is to say that both of you have moved on and you’re glad it’s in the past.  And then also stuff you face with food afterwards.

4. “Do you have a job lined up after school?”

First of all, I’m just trying to survive the fall semester. Your family only wants to see your hard work pay off and for you to be secure and successful someday.  However, questions like this can sometimes make you feel like you are behind in some way. Just know, you aren’t. You shouldn’t be in any rush to start your career.  Take time and find the perfect job for you, and more importantly focus on graduating first.

5. “It looks like you’ve been doing a lot of partying at school”

Well, I don’t usually tend to post pictures of me studying and having mental breakdowns from stress on my Facebook and Instagram…so…  Take this question with a smile and a laugh.  Tell them that yes, you are having fun while at college, but not to worry, there are plenty of nights spent studying and doing homework, too.

6. “We haven’t spoken in ages! Did you forget about me?”

First of all, the phone works both ways.  This question is just a way for your family member to express that they miss you.  Although it’s not the best way to express this emotion, they mean well.  Just explain to them that things become very busy at school and are fast paced.

7. “Are you graduating on time?”

For some, it takes more time to get in the swing of things while away at school.  Also, many students decide to switch their major halfway through their time at a university causing them to revert back to square one and basically start from scratch.  This is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed of.  If this is the case, be honest with your family member.

8. “Have you gained weight?”

This one is for those of you who have unapologetic and straight forward family members.  Brutal honesty can run deep in some families, and it doesn’t always work in their favor.  You should never have to deal with being criticized about your weight, but if this question does come up, don’t lose your temper and try to remove yourself from the conversation.

9. Basically anything that has to do with politics

OK, a little debate is always healthy, but things can become heated FAST in small spaces with too many family members present.  Your views are YOURS and you shouldn’t have to air them out unless you want to, especially if your viewpoints do not align with those of your family member’s.

10. “What are you thankful for this year?”

The golden Thanksgiving question.  This one is best to be prepared for.  Family is always a great answer, another is your education.  Think about what makes you most happy and be honest.  Don’t mold your answer based off of what will make your family members happy.

Thanksgiving gatherings don’t have to be cringe-worthy this year.  Know you are not alone with having to face some of the most awkward questions on Earth and handle them with grace.  The results will be greater this way.
