How to Get Rid of Bloating FAST

We’ve all been there – The food baby on its second trimester and you’ve got an event in just a few hours (cue the screams of terror). However, you can get rid of bloating faster (and easier) than you think!

1. Drink peppermint tea.

This soothing drink is high in menthol which helps get rid of bloating. Even an hour after eating it works wonders! Plus, peppermint tea leaves your breath smelling fresh…a win-win if you ask me.

2. Limit your dairy intake.

Dairy isn’t naturally in the human diet, making it difficult for many to digest. Problems digesting can lead to gas buildup, especially if you’re lactose intolerant. So on days you know you want your tummy looking its absolute best, leave the milk in the fridge. However, in small amounts, yogurt that is high in active cultures can aid digestion and ultimately help get rid of bloating!

3. Enjoy your food.

I know you enjoy your food…who doesn’t? But what I mean by this is to really take time to enjoy your food, instead of inhaling your meal. Eating too fast can trap air in your digestive tract. To help get rid of bloating, or prevent it all together – slow down and smell the roses (instead of smelling those nasty burps later on).

4. Practice yoga.

Physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day lowers risk of bloating and constipation. Yoga takes it a step further; increasing circulation, heightening mood and getting your digestion back on track.

5. Chow down on asparagus.

This green is a diuretic and high in fiber, which helps to flush any excess fluids out of your body. Not a fan of asparagus? For another diuretic veggie try artichokes, carrots or tomatoes!

6. Cut out excess salt.

When your body has too much salt, to maintain balance, it holds in extra water. To get rid of bloating, skip the salt shaker. Check the nutrition labels on food items to see how much salt you’re actually taking in on a daily basis – chances are, it’s higher than you think! Pro tip: if it needs more salt to taste good, it doesn’t taste that good in the first place.

7. Stock up on bananas and avocado.

Or anything high in potassium. Potassium deficiencies can often lead to constipation (and a whole lot of bloating), so eating a food high in this vitamin may help. Bananas are loaded with fiber too – an extra bonus!  Potassium also helps to balance the sodium levels in your body, the perfect addition to tip number 6!

8. Lessen the obvious irritants.

Chewing gum and drinking large amounts of soda both contribute to extra gas in your GI system. Do yourself a favor and limit your intake of these items and you’ll have a flatter stomach within hours!

9. Water, water, water.

Water you saying (you see what I did there…)? Your body needs water! I know this may sound counter intuitive since I mentioned before that when you’re body has too much salt, it will start to hold on to the water and cause bloating. So more water = more bloat…right? Wrong. When your body finally becomes hydrated, it will stop holding on to the water…and as a result, get rid of the bloating. Not a fan of water? Eat water-rich foods such as celery, watermelon, cucumbers or grapefruit!

10. Change your portion size.

Eating smaller portions throughout the day is easier for your GI tract to digest than larger portions less frequently. My favorite rule to get rid of bloating is to never stop eating!

Start gloating and stop bloating – you’ve worked hard and deserve to feel good about yourself!
