30 Free Things To Do When You’re Bored And In College

Are you bored? No longer! College is the time to live it up and love your life. That being said, the same old routine gets boring. What should you do…? Here is our complete list of things you can do when you’re bored!

Watch a movie

One of the most classic things to do when you’re bored is to watch a movie. Sit down and catch a good film, either alone or with your roommates, and don’t forget the snacks! This is prime bonding time here, don’t miss out on it!

Or read a book

If you’d prefer time alone, another one of the things to do when you’re bored is to spend some time curled up in bed with a good novel. Reading is both calming and educational: it allows you to take in information at your own pace instead of forcing you to keep up with someone else’s.

Read something in another language

If you’re extremely bored and want to kick reading up a notch, then try reading something in a language that you’re familiar with, but not an expert in. This challenges your mind to understand not only what is being said, but how. It will help you learn vocabulary and sentence structure faster than in a classroom.

Volunteer at the campus library

One of the best things to do when you’re bored and like books is to volunteer at the campus’s library. Take a day to learn where everything is and how libraries are set up. Spend time putting away books and enjoying the quiet. You never know what you’ll discover in some hidden corner!

Be an usher at a college performance

Another one of the best things to do when you’re bored is take part in the local campus events. Being an usher at the campus theater has more benefits than you realize: while you may not get paid, you get the show for free, and you get to boss people around to make them get to their seats!

Walk through your art department

Keeping in theme with staying local, take a stroll through your art building and look at the work that students have created. Many of them are up on display to show their talent. There could be paintings, charcoal portraits, sculptures, or even murals. Find what strikes your artistic eye.

Make a new dish

Make something up for a change! Grab whatever is in the fridge and cabinets, and mix it together to create a new meal. Just be careful when you’re putting things together: some ingredients will not combine well. Watch out for the outliers, and avoid disaster by knowing the culinary palettes.

Go for a walk through your local town

Find something interesting in the nearby town that helps you to learn more. Whether it’s a historical fact, an unusual shop, or a fun restaurant, let it be your guide to a more fun day. Take care to question the people you’re seeing too, they may have more information than you expect!

Create a photo shoot

One of the most creative things to do when you’re bored is to gather your girls and do a photo shoot. This is a great idea for photography students or videographers-in-training, who can use this in their portfolios!

Attend a college game

Even if you aren’t a sports fan, it’s almost required that you attend at least one college game in your lifetime. Go and support your team in their local game, and make sure you don’t lose an eye in the process: the crowd can get very rowdy!!

Go to a party

One of the most fun things to do when you’re bored. Find a party. Don’t crash it, but do join in as much as possible. Mingle and make friends. Meet the host or hostess with a smile, and don’t forget to dance! Show off your fun side!

Give a tour

For historical geeks or geography nerds, this is your cup of tea. Show potential students or parents around the campus next time someone wants a tour. Point out special touches that drew you in, and make them feel welcome. This is a great way to see what kind of students your school may be looking to accept!

Seek out a new club

Look for or make a new club at your college! Create something unique, like a language club, or join something for Greek Life if you can. Find someone with your similar interests, and make it your mission to make some new friends.

Try a new meal in the dining hall

What haven’t you tried on the menu? Time to find out what it tastes like! You can’t go the entire college career without having tried a few new things. And if you don’t like something, you don’t have to have it again. Save yourself the embarrassment of repeating this mistake in public.

Attend a cultural event

Take some time to learn about a culture other than your own. Colleges often host events that are meant to open the eyes of their students. Find one going on and learn about the differences that you see.

Learn about your school’s history…

Find that book in the library or that one person who knows everything about your college. Drill them on what they know. Is this school old or new? What stories are associated with it? Did anything interesting happen here?

Or architecture

Take a picture of the most interesting buildings on campus and glance them over. What are they? Slanted roofs with angled edges, or straight brick buildings with a beautiful stained window? Find the beautiful places in your school to photograph and learn about.

Craft night

Fun for the creative type. Use this as an excuse to spice up old clothes or come up with new crafts to do in a group. If your friends join, have them bring ideas of their own to try for next time.

Game night

For the ones who love to play, bring over some fun and simple party games. Though they aren’t hard, they can often get out of hand. College kids don’t mind a little roughhousing at times, so just be ready for the pieces to go flying!

Dance competition

Hold a dance competition, or attend one if your school is hosting. See who, among your classmates, floor mates, or fellow college students has the best dance moves. Don’t be afraid to take part too!

Midnight swim

One of the most fun and daring things to do when you’re bored is to run to the pool and take a midnight swim if you can. Swipe into the building and jump right in. Get a good hour in the water, then run back to your dorm room and pretend you didn’t leave if anyone asks.

Use your gym

One of the healthiest things to do when you’re bored is to go and get a good workout in. If you have the time, make it a long and tough workout that really builds your muscles and makes them ache. Be careful not to strain yourself too much, but do enjoy it as much as you can!

Clothing swap

If you’re really bored, and you have a friend who you know is the same size as you, try a clothing swap! Take something that you love from their closet, and let them do the same from yours. Just be sure to take care of the clothing, and give it back in the same condition you received it in!

Make a playlist

Musicians will love this. Take some time to create a playlist, whether it’s for driving, studying, or for simply falling asleep. This way, when you need to go somewhere, you have something ready to accompany and amuse you. One of the best things to do when you’re bored, in my opinion!

Call your family

Talk to Mom or Dad. Make sure you haven’t forgotten that they exist. Sometimes, our parents can be one of the best people to talk to, and they allow us to realize what we’re missing from home. Don’t ever underestimate this as one of the things to do when you’re bored! You know you want to check in!

Or a high-school buddy

Missing your friends? Don’t let that continue! Grab your phone and dial your buddy’s number. Talk with them for hours, or arrange to meet up if you two are close to each other. Enjoy catching up with your old friend while not losing your new ones.

Meet your floor mates

How many of you are familiar with every single one of your floor mates? I’m willing to bet you don’t know half of them, really. So go out and make them meet you! Knock on their doors and introduce yourself, then invite them to hang out. It’s a great one of many things to do when you’re bored!

People-create

One of the best things to do when you’re bored is make people. Make up stories for the people walking by, or the couples sitting around the park. Give them funny voices, silly backgrounds, and hilarious reasons for doing what they’re doing- just don’t get caught!

Meditate

Another thing to do when you’re bored is meditate: take some time for yourself. Clear your mind and relax. Give yourself time to calm down and be content in what you’ve achieved already. Don’t worry all the time. Let this be your reminder to take moments for yourself.

Plan your week

If you have no other things to do when you’re bored, the worst possible option is to plan your week. Make sure you make time for homework, social gatherings, and meals. You’ll thank yourself when you know when everything is supposed to be done by!

Which of these things will you try? Tell us in the comments!
