10 Free Things To Do Around Georgetown

Everyone needs a break from campus at some point, whether it’s the weekend or a weekday. And, let’s be honest, most of us college kids don’t have too much extra money to spend. Keep reading for 10 free things to do around Georgetown! They’re fun and you won’t have to spend any cash!

1. Watch animals play at the National Zoo.

The National Zoo is the perfect place to share some laughs and take a break from studying as you watch the animals play and learn a little bit more about the world around you in a zero-stress environment.

2. Take a casual stroll along the Tidal Basin Trail.

When you need a break from campus, a walk around the Tidal Basin will let you step back and enjoy some fresh air. You can wind down with a stroll, bike ride, or run. The trail wraps around the water and near the Jefferson Memorial making it refreshing and exciting.

 

3. Explore the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

What better way to learn about history than visiting DC’s newest museum? Instead staying in the library, venture to this museum located about 3 miles from the GU campus gates. Bring a notebook and pen, this way you can swap the late night study sesh with a trip to this state-of-the-art museum.

4. Spend a day taking in the views at the National Mall.

The National Mall is a great place to meet people from all over the world or find a picnic spot for you and your best buds. Because of its central city location, you can easily go to any famous monument from here. Maybe bring your English books to read in your favorite spot? Or run here and do some extra exercises. The possibilities are endless.

5. Grab free samples at the campus farmers’ market or the Eastern Market.

Take a break from Leo’s dining hall and the Hoya Court by checking out the various fruits and vegetables at this well-known market. Try the free samples at the fruit stand and see what deals you can bargain. You don’t even have to go for the food! As the vendors about their produce or just enjoy the atmosphere.

6. Visit every Smithsonian museum in DC. Every. Last. One.

As some of the most well known museums in the U.S., the Smithsonian museums are all worth one, two, maybe even three visits during your time at DC. Altogether, the Smithsonian Institution makes up 19 different museums and exhibits. The most famous of those being the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History.

 

7. Jam out at one of the Yards Park concerts.

Anyone who likes music will be pleased to know that DC offers free concerts throughout the year at Yards Park near the water. These concerts are surely some of the most memorable free things to do around Georgetown. They range from jazz and pop, to country and reach many other genres. 8. Take in the beauty of the Library of Congress & DC’s Union Station.

Get off campus for a major Instagram worthy trip! With your friends, you can snap some gorgeous photos with either location being your background. It’s one of the most Instagram-worthy free things to do around Georgetown. It also a nice activity to check off your bucket list.

9. Watch planes take off and land at Gravelly Point Park.

Whether on a date or alone, Gravelly Point Park may be a fun escape for anytime with anyone. It’s the perfect location for thinking about the world or having intellectual conversations with a friend.

10. Grab your girl group or a date a walk around the Cherry Blossom Festival.

One of the most talked about times in DC is spring for just this reason. Take advantage of your time in DC by checking out the beautiful Cherry Blossoms and enjoying their fresh scent. Not too many people can say no to this one! You won’t regret it.
